Good Reviews?
I bought this game on 360 years ago and I gave this game a fair shot... how is it this has good reviews?

Now, I'm not saying I know better than everyone here, I'm asking a legitimate question.

What is it about this game that people like? Clearly, I missed something when I played it. The lack of direction and no level scaling led me to be murdered constantly with (if I recall) no autosave (or a really bad one). Being a dragon sucked because I was so underpowered and the quest log, I believe, was quite terrible.

I can't remember if there were significant bugs or not, but I gave this game a fair shake and I didn't like it. I just want to know if it just isn't the game for me or if I missed out on a potentially entertaining experience.

What do you guys (who bought it) think?

I don't mind level scaling. QTE is alright when it's not over-saturated and it doesn't mean you're going to have to restart what you're doing just because you mess it up (like how RE4 did it during cutscene, ugh...). But QTE can be alright. Not great, but alright.

And I don't mind collectibles. My favorite games have collectibles.

Some collectables are OK, but it is the ones where there are just insane numbers of them that get annoying. As far as QTE I like to build a good character to beat the boss monsters not rely on following set out screen prompts to defeat a creature no matter how strong or weak my character is.
Reminds me of FFX. That 200 IN A ROW task you have to complete for Lulu's Celestial Weapon... ugh, horrible implementation. 200 total? Sure, I can do that. One after another? Get bent.

As for QTE, I think a mix of the two is where it works. Even then I don't care for it much, myself, but it doesn't ruin my experience this way. Kind of like in the God of War games, when you tap a button to finish off a boss or enemy after you fight them normally.

JUST QTE, though... like in Shadow of Mordor at the final boss? Absolutely unacceptable. Still a great game, though. :Maul:

I don't know what it was about this game that I couldn't enjoy it, but maybe I should have grinded more? I think what might have happened was I spent enough time to get through each area, but when I had the opportunity to become a dragon, I took it. Which, of course, meant I was weak.

Do you know if there are any differences between the PC and Xbox 360 versions? I bought Divinity 2: Ego Draconis for that, so I'm just curious if I had some significant difference that might have contributed to my overall disappointment.

Maybe I'll repurchase this game and treat it as I should have initially. An exploration RPG.

Thanks for the input.
As a huge Dark Souls fan myself, I'm wondering if you got around to replaying this game (new version or otherwise). It sounds like they made a lot of balancing changes with DKS/Developer's cut so I'm glad I was able to play that version rather than the original release (Ego Draconis).

I knew if I expected this to be like Dark Souls I would be disappointed, but it's still a very good game. It's just a bit different. It seems to be very underrated as Divinity 2 is one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

The dragon fighting is mostly balanced IMO, but there are 2 rage inducing segments. I won't go into specifics in case it's a spoiler, but you'll know it when you get there. It's not just the difficulty, but also the lack of objectives.

Also, the flying fortresses are a bit grindy. Since the base game (not the DLC) has no respawning enemies AFAIK, I view them more as farming areas than required parts of the game.

No, I bought it, but my pc isn't capable of playing it well.

I assume you tried turning all the graphic settings down and lowering the resolution? There is also a way to play in windowed mode if some of the lower resolutions aren't supported.

You just have to turn some down, my mother was able to play the game on a computer that was around 7-8 years old, so either you need an upgrade more than she did or there is something wrong with the setting you are trying.

There are 3 places you can either trigger opponents to spawn (in Broken Valley during the mirror room test in Maxos temple, there is a barrel that spawns 3 opponents each time it is opened and the fjords in Keara's headquarters, trying to open the door to the inner headquarters without correctly solving the statue name puzzle will spawn opponents throughout the headquarters) or delay doing something to stop respawning (Aleroth during the last part of the section to close the rifts, you can let opponents attack Zandalor so he keeps restarting the spell.).

These are all relatively weak opponents, though, with little experience if you are not clearing groups at a time (WotR + splitting arrows, explosive arrows, fireballs, etc). The easiest place to get a lot of opponents is the one in the fjords (one person reported saving, then spawning so many opponents that game performance dropped significantly and there was a risk of crashing, then clearing them out with AOE damage). However, that is relatively close to the add-on section of the game, so unless you just want to top off your experience to level, you might as well wait until there are stronger opponents that can respawn, for a lot more experience, to do any grinding (though that shouldn't be necessary).

I remember buying the disc for this before Steam, I was playing through the start kinda enjoying it, but then I ran into three skeletons which were impossible to beat. I tried kiting them and even ducked behind a rock and ffs the damn arrow was like a heat seeker flying over the rock and down at me to hit and kill. That pretty much did me in for this. Are all enemy range stuff homing or was this a fluke?

If it was the three skellies that spawned when you picked up a key to open a door it was because you jumped up a cliff that you were no meant to. if you followed the path you would have found the battles MUCH easier.

Some ranged attacks have a slight homing effect, some do not. If you bought the original release of Ego Draconis, this effect was reduced in the Dragon Knight Saga (and so the Developer's Cut).
In DKS / D2:DC, mid to long range you should generally have enough time to sidestep ranged attacks directed at you, if you see them coming. Playing a ranger in DKS, other archers weren't a problem except early in the game (especially when using poisoned arrows, or in larger groups of mixed ranged and melee opponents).

The transforming into a dragon, story was good enough to like playing through it.

Armor designs were good, i never thought that it needed to be better.

Sound-track was great loved listening to it.

Quests were interesting especially this one roflmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSRcfOgLwaA

The composer's website, Kirill Pokrovsky[www.kirillpokrovsky.com], has the Divinity soundtracks and other music.

Yeah. The soundtrack is amazing.

It is one of the reasons I like the feel of "EU" games over American games. They seem to just "feel" nicer to play.

Yeah, I know. Even if I turned down the resolution (which would smooth it out most of the time, I'm sure), I want to play this game with better settings. Also, at a better time.

I'm just going to wait until I build my PC. No rush.

Yeah, I just turned down all of the settings. I was planning to just put it in windowed mode with a lower resolution, but I figured I'd rather not handicap it so much just to play the game. I'll wait until I can play it properly. My laptop isn't very powerful (it's about four years old) and from the sounds of things, the hard drive is starting to give way.

I'll wait it out. No rush.
