Old post but... Early game, set armor is good as you do the valley and village area. Once you get your tower and sentinel island.

Once you hit Obobas Fjords. Ignore set armor as its pretty useless, and work on getting at the least, red EPIC armor. The later set armor is only better until you enchant and upgrade epic armor. with 3 charm slots, and 2 regular slots it will be better than your set armor. The Ulthring's isn't bad as a set, but fully upgrade EPIC armor will beat it out. You'll find some doing the enemy general battlement areas, plus the family loot chest.

And better than set armor, is UNIQUE armor, which usually has 3 charm slots and 3 enchantment slots. Farming the reward chest in the far back of Obobas Fjords can get UNIQUE stuff. When i did it i farmed it until i got 2 UNIQUE armor pieces (helm and chest) and a unique weapon.

When you hit Flames of Vengeance, Unique or named armor usually is better than the set armors. The weapon seller has a bunch of awesome named unique weapons of nice power, plus the armor seller next to him some items. The set pieces are ok, but lack the charm and enchantment slots that can make EPIC and unique armor more powerful.

Just the armor? Sure set armor is ok. But if your actually enchanting your own armor up, the set armor is weaker and not needed especially since you have to gather it all up as a set to get the increased benefits. Regular Epic or unique armor you can build up as you find the stuff/money/ingredients.

early game your looking for set armor, or at the least legendary/elder pieces. Obobas Fjords now your wanting epic armor from the enemy general flying camps, or unique armor from the special reward chest. Once you get into Flames of Vengeance DLC, named armor on the merchants is vastly superior to even the unique items you've found in Obobas Fjords.

My unique weapon was 90ish damage, with 3 charms/3 enchantments of 100 magic/100 regular/life leech. Named weapons on the flames of vengence weapon vendor were 3/3, and 300ish normal damage. No contest comparing the vast upgrades the named items of flames of vengence have power-wise.

Even my unique armor with 48 armor wasn't nothing compared to the named armor in flames of vengence 87 armor rating when enchanted.
