I'm near the end of Ego Draconis. I play it with a melee warrior build, focusing on whirlwind, summon ghost (it heals me in battle), mindread and lockpick.
I noticed that most of the good loot is for dual wield, ranged or magic but not for two handed warrior (or I was just unlucky).
If you did not play the game yet then I advise you to not worry much about your build, but keep focusing on a few skills instead of having many weak skills.
At the beginning it's worth spending on lockpick and mindread.
Later in the game when you will have your dragon form and access to battle tower you can increase the cap of any of your skills for gold. You can also unlearn all skills and redistribute your points to different skills. The game gives you complete freedom on your abilities and does not restrict you to a certain build.
Due to my high strength stat and boosts provided by both the regenerate skill at skill level 13 (via trainer) and by accessories, my HP regenerates at nearly 3% of my total HP per second, which by itself might sound like a recipe to be killed by mobs at higher levels, but that presumes the mobs would be able to withstand my onslaught of magic and steel, all which boast high DPS and many being able to damage multiple enemies simultaneously, like whirlwind, firewall, and magic missile, all having their skill level cap raised by a trainer. Of course, there's also thousand strikes for that one pesky enemy you for whatever reason want dead immediately (unless they be a boss, because you know bosses always have more health).
Finally, on slot eight is the active skill healing, just in case you actually need it. (Why? IDK. I hardly ever use it. That's why it's on the last slot.)
