How do you use skills in this game?

So both my characters have healing at one, from the skill window I left and right click the icon but nothing happens. How do you actually use non passive skills like magic?

Beside either character portrait click on the 'secondary skill' hand icon just above the potion icon, and a selection of available icons will be shown, including Whirlwind, Sneak, Enter Battlefields (if you have found a battlefield key in the act you are in), Healing and any other active skills the respective character knows. Left click on an icon to select it as your secondary skill (the current one indicated by 'SEC' shown in the top left corner of the icon, if applicable). After that, just right click to use the secondary skill. For the healing spell you can right click anywhere; offensive skills may need a target (you can hit the Ctrl key to target the opponent closest to your mouse cursor).

The top hand icon beside each portrait is for the primary skill, triggered when you left click an opponent (default is 'use weapon' but you can change it to whirlwind or an offensive spell, if the character knows any).
