To sum up the main points from it that I remember being important & remember doing:
- There's a bug in the game where if one of your characters becomes too encumbered and full of loot that they can't move, the game will try to a display a "Too Heavy!" floating message above them but it will crash the game 100% of the time unless you hex edit the game to fix it. Follow the "How to Patch This Code" section from this post on the official Larian forums, I used a HEX editing plugin for Notepad++: https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=665838 (copy and paste this link into your browser, the "you are leaving steam" page seems to break this link)
- There's a save corrupting bug in Act 4 involving a quest about retrieving an amulet for a merchant. If you complete this quest by giving the merchant the amulet he asked for it will break any future saves and make you unable to load them, so just don't complete that quest. It's worth noting that throughout the game there are multiple quests that involve retrieving amulets for people but it's only the one in Act 4 (Academy) that you need to worry about. I can even confirm this save corruption problem myself because I tested that one myself with multiple saves when I finally got to it. It's really only a mundane sidequest that offers some exp (and a Deathknight Sword?) so it's nothing to worry about skipping.
The rest of the missing beginner's guide was mostly tips and tricks, the things I've written here are the two most important things that you need to fix/avoid doing.Though I also recommend setting up dxwnd for this game. I played it in a window and it was much more comfortable than trying to play in fullscreen. This guide here covers that: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3001494013
There's also a font size patch that is recommended for use on higher resolutions: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1129614164
