Is it as hard as the first one?
VTV broke my ball sack, I persevered and eventually conquered it (Switch version years back). I don't even want to admit the amount of hours I put into doing that. The thing is, when all was said and done, I decided it was TOO hard and that it wasn't worth the hours I spent. The many hours. This one says it has modern QOL touches to make it more accessible. Is this working well in practise?

I consider myself quite decent at retro platform games. I can beat Ghouls and Ghosts arcade, for example. But like VTV that took maybe 100 hours of practise back in the day, and I am kind of over doing that for 90 minute games. And I will never forget the first time I beat G&G and realised I had to do it all again to get the true ending LOL.

Games I have REALLY enjoyed that are action platformers are things like Guns Gore and Cannoli. I think they made that difficult enough but truly accessible. My friend Pedro is another one I play through every so often. Katana Zero another, although I got through that one really easily but it just plays so well. I think GG&G nailed the balance the best, with VTV being way too hard. I am 52 in a few weeks remember, an old fart, with arthritic hands but I persevere. I have played games since Atari 2600, but mainly since C64 days when I was 10. So 41 years of constant gaming will do that to your hands, believe me.

Anyway, I really like the gameplay video and music and WANT to give it a try, but if it's going to be as hard as the first one I am going to "just say no" and not bother. I don't feel bad at all about using help features on games that are that difficult, if they are there.

What does the game actually offer versus the first to make it less of a rage quitter?

There are more power-ups, there are a heck of a lot more checkpoints (worlds are also bigger, but a lot more check points). Those are also optional and you can smash them for a lot of points to get more lives if you want (or get extra lives other ways), but if you do this - you cant use that particular one as a checkpoint.

There is a completely optional undead mode you can turn on to make yourself partially invincible. You can do this from the options menu when you first start playing OR the game will present it as an option if you use 6 continues (but you dont have to).

The game has multi-profiles and save game so you can put it down and come back without having to play through the whole thing in one sitting.

Make no mistake the game is not easy. Its not meant to be. It has things about it that can and do make it easier in a lot of ways over the first game, but if you didnt like the core of what the original game was you might not?

I tried to make the game both easier and harder and either choice optional for those that wanted an easier experience and others that wanted a harder experience without changing the core of what the game was about. Solving challenges placed before you, one after the other.

I do hope you get it and enjoy it, obviously, but I also understand if you dont! Thank you for taking the time to even think about it and even more so writing that wonderful post.

I hope I answered your questions thoroughly.

PS: I turned 50 on Dec 8th :) One of the measuring sticks at the time of making Volgarr 1 was if my mother who was 65 at the time could beat it (who didnt play video games) and she did ;)

It is a lot easier, you don't even need to use undead mode, you can just continue where you died on bosses, you get even armor to play recklessly and damage boost them. It's very easy to throw yourself against a wall via trial & error and beat it from checkpoint to checkpoint as the game has, albeit having more checkpoints, no functional consequences, unlike the first game. So it is a very casual (friendly) game, but also not as well thought out as the first game.

To others reading this thread I would say that 100%:ing this game legit is more difficult than the first. With the checkpoint system and undead thing everyone will be able to beat the standard campaign. Levels are longer, equipment is stronger and more forgiving. There will be tricky moments and no amount of equipment is going to save you from falling into holes or insta-death fire.
I did Volgarr 2 right after the first basically so it should've helped me a lot.

Congratulations :) Also, damn! Your mother is impressive :happymeat:

Appreciate your take and insight. Thank you very much for playing the game. Please leave a review and tell your friends. (well... and your enemies if they don't like hard games and you feel like trolling them) ;)

Thank you for making them!
I did a review today of both games
Hoping for a third 🙏

While its great for your enemies too I definitely recommend it as a game taking turns with several people or like me and my brother playing it side by side.
We paused and watched each other at boss fights.
I literally had tears in my eyes laughing when my brother manged to stay too close to the left on the first boss and the platform disappeared and he died without even facing the boss :cozycastondeath:

HAHA I love that story about your brother and the 1st boss!

I am working on another game in the "Volgarr the Viking" universe. However, it is nothing like the first two games at all. Find me over on blue sky or find Crazy Viking to keep up to date on it. Thank you for playing Volgarr II. :)
