Droid AI is not designed to keep them alive, it's designed to make them kill other droids. If you want droids that are better at staying alive get armoured ones, or ones with more hitpoints, and try to ensure they've got multicore brains. Their only other purpose is as a meat shield and emergency hosts when your current host gets the finger.
also i think the chasis bar and the life bar of the selected droid is usually different.
arent they meant to be the same?

Perhaps a frame around the chassis bar could make it more obvious, so you've got blue for intact chassis, red for damaged and black for degraded.
