Xbox 360 Control Testing

So, we have had control support ready since launch, although not fully polished. The reason we took it out was that players need updated drivers for the controller to work correctly, the ones that come pre-packed with your controller don't work.

If you would like to try out the game with your Xbox 360 Controller, here's how to do it:

1) Update your drivers here (make sure you get the right ones for your OS!):

2) Put a file named "xbox2" (no file extension!) in your game directory ( Steam\steamapps\common\hotline_miami\ )

3) Make sure your controller is plugged in and calibrated correctly!

4) Now you're ready to launch the game. The controller should be working by the time you reach the start menu (not the steam dialog).

To disable the controller, simply remove the "xbox2" file from your directory and restart the game!

The tutorial doesn't display the correct keys in the current build and you will not be able to re-configure the controls.

Correct controller setup is as follows:
-Start or A to select.
-Back to return or pause the game.
-Left stick to move.
-Right stick to aim.
-Right trigger to shoot.
-Left trigger or right shoulder to pick up.
-A to do a ground kill.
-Press right stick to lock on to nearest enemy.
-Start or A to advance dialogue.

There are some minor annoyances with the controls currently that we will do our best to smooth out. Feedback is very welcome and will help us get everything right!

PS. If your controller is not plugged in correctly before launching the game or the game cannot find it for some reason, you will experience massive slow down.

After some more testing it worked one time with the music playing but something triggered the rumble and it got stuck rumbling so I had to quit out of the game for it to stop.

I'm having the exact same problem with my wireless 360 pad as well. So I've deleted the xbox2 file I've created, except the Abort/Ignore error still happens every time I start the game.

Edit: Even after deleting the game data/unininstalling the game and redownloading it, the same error occurs despite no xbox2 file. The game either exits when I select Abort, or it starts the game with no music.

Using a wired 360 controller. Works perfectly so far, I'm glad too because I felt like this would be more suited for a controller.

This worked great for me, but, a question:

Is there not a way to move the view ahead like the 'Shift' button plus moving the mouse would do on a pure keyboard setup? I found that that was key during play to be able to do!

@ mrhaydel, I think it's 'hold left button and move right stick' to do that.

@cactus, controls work perfect for me with the 'xbox2' file fix. I was terrible with m/kb, I'm killing now with gamepad :D

Tried it out, worked very well, very smooth and all the buttons worked right. Only things I noticed were the misleading tutorial that tells you to use right bumper when it means A and the very first screen that asks to enable steamworks does not respond to controller inputs for me, I have to choose with the keyboard. Everything after that is gravy.

Off topic, great game, really love it, feels like an awesome mashup of Manhunt meets SmashTV. That final boss was a good 15 minutes of hell, and Chapter 13: Assault on a police precinct, I get it!

Edit: Found a small issue with the Bum fight at the end of metro, A button wasn't working to execute him, after a little fooling around it turned out that right bumper performed the execution in this case. This is the only situation I've found like this so far, in every other instance things work as they should.

Seems to work fine for me, vibration and all. My only complaints would be that the button configuration does not feel natural for me with the "A" button assigned to ground attacks. Once a button configuration menu is implemented that will no longer be an issue.

I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! (sorry for the caps, but I need your attention) I just bought this game and I'm absolutely useless with the keyboard controls...so much so that I can't really play the game at all and it's bumming me out. I know that's lame for those who've grown up playing PC games, but my faMILY didn't get a computer till I was 20 (32 now) so I've practically been raised with a console controller in my hands. I was thrilled to see Hotline Miami had Xbox controller support. I updated my drivers and was set to go and nothing happens. So I found this page and tried the instructions on creating an "xbox2"...only I've run into a peculiar problem: when I try to put the file name in quotation marks I get the little error bing and a message that says file names cannot contain any of the following characters;:\ / * ? " |

So I'm at a loss. I tried creating the xbox file without "" and the game doesn't seem to connect to the controller. In the steam version I bought there is no Option menu, onle Start, controls, Chapters and Exit. Si I even tries a PIRATED COPY (given that I've already paid for it) and the Pirated Copy contained an Options tab within the Game Menu. In th options there was a Xbox360on/off button, I turned it on, and the Pirated copy accepted my 360 contoller...with one major drawback: THE START AND A BUTTONS DID NOTHING!. I could hit select and exit the menu, and then the game, but I couldn't go forward or even start the damn thing. This is really frustrating. If anyone could help me with this I'd be eternally grateful. I really want to play this game, and right now it's just sitting on my computer.

Whoa, this game is very much improved with a gamepad. This is the first time I've felt gimped by M&K.

Everything works for me, all buttons and actions function correctly.
My one suggestion is that the dpad may also be used to cycle the options on on the main menu and the mask menu.

i did the steps outlined in the OP and still no luck with this. also, i edited hotline.cfg to make joystick 1, and deleted the save. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I followed all instructions without any success. The controller used to work for Hotline Miami some time ago. I wonder if it has something to do with switching to Windows 10 (though the controller works fine with other games)

This topic is very old and the information here is totally outdated. I suggest you open a separate thread for your issue. Before that though, I recommend you to read the FAQ information about controllers:

My Xbox 360 controller is not recognized by the game.
First, update your Xbox 360 controller drivers[www.microsoft.com].

Go to "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\HotlineMiami" and open "hotline.cfg" with Notepad. Check that the line "joystick=1" is present, if you see "joystick=0" instead, change it to 1 and save.

If that doesn't help you might want to try and disable rumble in the launcher (or setting "rumble=0" in "hotline.cfg").

It is also possible that other drivers interfere with the controller. Some people report that after getting a new mouse and installing its drivers the controller does not work anymore. If you have a gaming mouse like Razer for example, which has its own drivers, and you don't make use of the advanced features offered by these drivers, uninstall them.

If you have installed any virtual device program such as vJoy (which lets you use any device as a fake Xbox controller) it might interfere as well as the game will probably try to use the virtual device instead of the keyboard. Uninstall or disable the virtual devices.
