Similar how? Movies set in the 80's, violent movies, or what? I think American Psycho is set in the 80's.

American Psycho seems like a clear influence on the crazy-ass plot (especially the "did any of these really happen" aspect). Obviously Miami Vice is a big influence, too.

And there were definitely some moments during the game that felt like the last scene of scarface.

Drive. The movie is even mentioned in the credits of the game (Its director, rather). It was an inspiration on the game, no in theory, but by the dev's own say so.

This game reminds me of 'Oldboy' for some reason.

Watch "Cocaine Cowboys" its not fake, its a documentary about the drug trade in Miami during the 80's. Lots of murder and double crossing. BEST OF ALL, its real!

ACTUALLY, BEST DOCUMENTARY IVE EVER SEEN. period.

This game strongly reminds me Lynch's films for its storytelling. Give a try to Lost Highway, it's violent (but not an action movie), the soundtrack is awesome (David Bowie, Trent Reznor, Lou Reed, Barry Adamson...) and the atmosphere is thrilling. One of the best films I've ever seen.

The game itself is influenced on a movie called Drive. The director of Drive is thanked in Hotline Miami's credits, actually. I'd say check that out.

Manhunter: the first Hannibal Lector film that came out in 1986.

Different cast, different EVERYTHING.

It was directed by Micheal Mann (the guy who did Miami Vice).

A lot of people prefer it to the other (more well known and famous) Lector films.

The movie is AMAZING, as is it's soundtrack.

Miami Vice television series, Scarface. Honestly as close as you are going to get would be a slasher movie.

I think he's looking for surreal and extremely gorey crime films with badass (and fitting) soundtracks (perhaps set in the 1980's).

Lost Highway, definitely. much more to do with sex than anything else, but it's got the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ story and the extreme violence down.

As far as movies loaded to the gills with gore, you shouldn't dismiss the horror genre right off the bat. the game is definitely influenced by the straight-to-VHS slashers and "video nasty" horror films of the '70s and '80s, such as Twitch of the Death Nerve/Bay of Blood and Driller Killer, among several others not really worth recommending. Modern blood bath horror movies that I would recommend would be some of the French horror movies of the last decade, such as High Tension and Inside.

Did anyone see Jason take Manhattan? That movie was pretty awesome.

It's already been suggested but Scarface, maybe 8 Million Ways To Die, or Thief (1981)? also, Miami Vice.
