So what you are saying is that the game does not save your progress at all? Be careful: in the main menu there are two options, one to start from the intro, and one to continue where you left.
- Multiple instances of gameplay can be spawned and live in parallel (e.g. I play Civilization alone, a friend shows up, I pause my game to play another game with him, I resume my previous game later);
- The user may need to be able to set backtracking points (e.g. I play Civilization and am about to do a risky attack, and I'd rather just be able to pretend nothing happened in case it doesn't work).
For games where there is no need for backtracking or where only a single instance of gameplay can exist, having manual save makes no sense and has no added value from a game design point.Though usually when people bring up this issue with Hotline it's because they missed the "Continue" button and continuously use "Start" instead. Now, I do agree that having "Start" before "Continue" in the menu is not good design... :)
