As for Unity it's the same, there a lot of big hits which were made using Unity: Rust, Wasteland 2, Endless Space...
Also, just to be precise, Original version was made using GameMaker and Updated version (which is actually the port to PS3/Vita) was made using PhyreEngine.
GameMaker: Studio isn't open-source, if you want open-source alternative, you might consider Phaser + Webpack + Capacitor stack.
