Not all games on steam use the steam DRM, so you dont need to run steam for some games.
I guess if you want a proper DRM-free version you should buy it at

Yeah, sorry for the necro. I realised it AFTER I had typed and posted. Pretty sure I was searching to find out if this game I was hoping to buy used the basic steam api drm. I was pretty sure I saw it on the list of DRM free online, yet I guess I wanted to double check to make sure it was the BEST purchase for myself. As mentioned I enjoy those games most because of ease of use for my own library. Usually they take up the LEAST system resources also, which is a nice bonus.
