Mask suddenly changed from Brandon to Richard after dying!

Title.
I was playing Assault with Brandon, and then died to a cop. When I respawned, I was wearing the Richard mask, and had Richard's ability (i.e. I was walking slower). Happened three times in the same session, couldn't figure out why.

Does anyone know why? Sometimes I tend to hold shift even after I die and before I respawn; does this contribute?
