There are plenty of games that have an obvious clear cut end, but allow the player to continue endlessly beyond that point to enjoy their maxed out stats/build etc if they desire.

Only you can decide if that's something you want to do. It's optional.

The game has the story progression linked to things you find in the mines. There's also a culmination and the actual end of the story. Although you can continue doing the runs after you achieve it if you want to find all of the blueprints.

personally I found this game to have a definite end after which I stopped playing

I got to the end well before upgrading everything, but I suppose there are so many upgrades not because they're required to finish, but to make it easier for some people to complete the game

Yes this game has an end.

You can still play more runs after reaching the end, but there is a moment in the game that screams "you have beaten this game now".
