How do you attach objects?

e.g. a cat and a piece of toast? I've been using tape and glue but the game doesn't always seem to like those.

You have to pick one up, and then go to the second object.

.... Have you tried rope or chain? I know that you can connect things using that method.

Doesn't work. You can combine things like a baseball bat and a lamp this way, but that wont work with toast and cat.
