Ulfar on Eufrates II

So, I am in the middle of my third playthrough and I had a question regarding Ulfar's quest - what happens if you decide not to take him in your party during the siege? Does that automatically fail his quest or are you able to just meet him near the Hellbrute and still preserve your party? Ideally I would like to take other party members with me, but if it is the only way to complete his quest I will have to think of a place for Ulfar in my composition, so I am asking in advance.

I think he will leave you party permanently.

I thought he is locked in when you do the siege?
