"Show Base Outfit Headwear" option not working?

Hi all, i just got this game yesterday. My character's origin is imperial navy, but it has given me a very silly looking bicorne which is there whenever i dont wear another helmet

I dont like this hat, but wearing helmets hides it nicely like so

This worked fine until a few minutes ago when i found some tactical goggles i'd prefer to wear (although the look of them is very monocular and they only cover the left eye)

The problem is, that wearing this brings the bicorne back too, i dont want that.
Thankfully, it seems like there is a solution. I found a button that opens the appearance panel, it has two relevant settings

Show Helmet: This one removes all visible headwear, letting me see my hair, which is nice. But it also removes the goggle thing i'm wearing, not ideal

I would assume that turning this off disables the bicorne. But it was already off, and it does not do that. Turning it on doesnt seem to do anything either

Unless i switch back to the helmet and turn it on, in which case it seems to show the bicorne instead of the helmet

But what i want, is to have no hat at all, to see my hair, and to wear the goggle thing on the face. How can i accomplish this?

Is there any way i can change my base outfit? I picked naval officer for the mechanical bonuses, i'm not a fan of the aesthetic ;-;

Yeah it used to hide the navy hat when wearing goggles and other eyewear but doesn't do it anymore. Makes me mad.
