Otherwise go max ico for ico buffs. That is for mechanics.
Otherwise story wise most ico choices are good but some will backfire on you if you choose ico. So a mixture of mostly ico choices with some dogmatic ones for best results.
40k is a universe that being nice(ico) in the most important choices(related to chaos) will doom you or many other people than the dogmatic choice will kill.
You can't play as both if you want max conviction in one or the other, and in doing so you will struggle to get past Follower in the other.
When it comes to choosing a conviction just for an item like Joyeus Helmet, it's not necessary on any difficulty. The Helmet of Joyeus is very nice for offensive Psykers, but is not necessary at all as you will destroy everything whether you have the 4 default Psy Rating, or 6-15+ Psi Rating as dogmatic or crazy Psi Rating scaling as Heretical with their itemisation/bonuses.
I find these days even playing Sanctic iconcoclast builds with no real use for Joyeus Helmet, that I'm moving increasingly away from things like Psalms of the Emperor too until much later in progression. With the right team build up all my fights no matter what I do, kill everything on Unfair in the first Round or Two. There's only like a half dozen fights in the game maybe, that go past three Rounds.
One can also argue that 30 point discount to Momentum for all party members, extra movement points and temp health at combat start, is worth more than Helmet of Joyeus for just one Psyker in the party that only becomes more effective on a Psyker MC compared to companions late game/ Late game you don't even care you're already a god or should be as Psyker.
remember that we have Heinrix which I believe has Votary Dogmatic. That's where my Joyeus helm goes. :p :P
All that said, for a Blade Dancer/Executioner Psyker (or not), Dogmatic IS the way to go for the extra Burning on crits. Burning is the hardest DoT to qualify for outside using Executioner's Carnival of Misery.
Lastly I have to disagree with the previous poster on Conviction outcomes. Anyone who has seen/played both conviction routes knows that for the Koronus Espanse and overall health and prosperity of it, Iconoclast wins out by a mile and half.
Sure you have one bad outcome in the beginning of the game, but then its all roses and rainbow farts from there. Even the first iconoclast major decision can be argued as "meh" to "ok." *Rycad Epilogue Spoilers*
If you save People and the Nobility you get a Dogmatic mirror of Daemon System Rycad with New Rycad colony. It literally becomes a super power and raids nearby systems to route out heresy in full scale invasions, in a similar way to the Daemon World Rycad sending out raiding parties and influencing its neighbouring systems (unfortately).
If you save People but not Nobility (Note People + Reactor or Noble + Reactor don't have a combo epilogue, they will get their default ones as stated here as if you only rescued them), the people will build New Rycad as an egalitarian society initially that eventually slips back into its old nobility power structures as new nobility arises.
If you save Nobility and not People, the nobles have no workforce and eventually hire mercs/pirates and New Rycad becomes a pirate Den. Worst ending NEVER save nobles over people or reactor they were always useless and to blame for what happened. Maybe instead of hiding in their bunkers they may have caught on to a conspiracy or two and been way ahead of the game able to evacuate Rycad without it becoming what it became.
If you save the Reactor/Priests the Monks use the Reactor to build a super Cathedral Ship (these are basically huge ships used to protect Pilgrim (colony) Fleets. This means that by saving them you ensure the safety of success of many Colonial expeditions. The Trade off being one Daemon System for likely dozens of new Colonies). Keep in mind Daemon Words are terrible regardless lol..
The only real drawback here especially since they have now turned it into a Talent, is the Malediction of Rycad -5 debuff to Willpower. Not a huge deal even fore Psykers etc. (I ended up even on Willpower with this debuff endgame so it mad eno difference as no skills scale off Willpower).
That's it. That's the big bad of being Iconcoclast. Everywhere else if you play optimally + secret ending will basically lead to Utopian Koronus Expanse (epilogue even uses the word, keeping in mind it's 40K. Different definition of "utopia" lol), protected by a Realspace Benevolent Star God. The Imperial fleet that is sent to wipe out the dynasty fails miserably because the vast majority of its ships defect during the Battle of Dargonus and the RT essentially inherits the Koronus Imperial Fleet as his/her own. Your denizens being educated and having a Charter of Minimal Rights, even leading to the "Valanius School of Philosophical Thought." Living conditions go waaaayyy up even to the visual point of Footfall looking like a nice place to live lol. A truce + trading relationship with the Aeldari akin to Dark age of Technology relations as opposed to all out war where the Aeldari raid the Koronus Expanse killing possibly millions in their attempts to rescue stranded Aeldari there etc etc etc.
That's opposed to Dogmatic burning half the Kornous system down and going on a Crusade with their version (which has it's bonuses of "going on the offensive." :)
But get ready to kill a lot of people ruthlessly as Dogmatic and miss out on a lot of opportunity as Lawful (Stupid) Good (Neutral/Evil) can. :D :D
Iconcoclast is literally by end game the re-introduction of the Age of Enlightenment. Get people to read, get them their basic needs, stop provoking rebellions and uprisings leading to Chaos corruption every two minutes.
Dogmatic by endgame like the rest of the Imperium, is Spanish Inquisition on steroid. :D
There is ,for example, in Rykaad Minoris a minor choice that the dogmatic choice is better than the ico one if you want to be good.
Another choice the dogmatic choice is better than the ico choice is act 3 choice when you meet the dark eldar hemonculous near the end of the act. What to do with that section of Commoragh.
But what I've liked in this game not all ico choices are going to the best, and not all dogmatic are worst than ico.
But usually most ico are goody two shoes and will mostly not get catastrophe , most dogmatic are middle of the road so to speak for changing things to the better and most if not all hereticus are evil options.
There are ico choices that are locked behind dogmatic choices dialog that are better than the straight initial ico choices. Ex Janus.
Or anything , if you want to have Ylriet best ending , usually don't take the reconciliation with her people path.
Also now you can easily reach in act 4 rank 4 in ico and rank 2 in both dogmatic and hereticus. With both the new ico choices.
And rank 5 ico abilities are not worth your time.
And +5 in psy rating is godly. I've reached rank 13 for my main psyker, in psy rating with that item(4+5+2+2 from blood drinker staff).
But usually the game isn't that hard even on unfair to min-max for psykers. As long as you have good officers and bring Cassia(with all of her navigators tallents taken).
Dogmatic: Lawful neutral. You don't really give a damn about people's lives because 40k life is miserable enough BUT at least you keep humanity afloat by abiding to the laws and shoot anything evil or against the law of imperium. Humanity first, human lives can f*ck yourselves
Iconoclast: Neutral/Chaotic good. Because life suck in 40k at least we gotta care for each other, being compassionate to other people is rare in 40k and you treat human being as... human being instead of tools and expendable servants
Heretic: Chaotic evil. Well 'nuff said, you're servant of the archenemy
*Major Spoilers about almost everything" :p :P
- Yes Daemon world is very bad as a portal for Chaos and almost impossible to get rid of without further corruption (as Heinrix suggests when he says "From what i have heard, you don't want to be there during a Daemon world bombardment" (and we know because of just the debuff we get for looking at the world while we run away) lol.
But it's just as bad as the Koronus Expanse being surrounded by huge Warpstorms, Chaos having their own route through the Maw which is likely still in operation (unlike the Maw for everyone else), being close to the Eye of Terror on the wrong side etc etc. Daemon Worlds are a dime a dozen sheesh!! (lol jk on dime a dozen they're bad haha).
- Incendia can be redeemed as an Iconoclast and becomes Iconoclastic herself. She will also join Iconoclast RT into Act 5 as their secret party member. You would think it would have been Winterscale, but he ends up a cripple form being redeemed (he becomes a good governor tohugh of his Dynasty again until his death).
- The Act 3 Dogmatic choice is terrible lol. Yes Drukhari are ♥♥♥♥♥ but do you know what's even worse? hiving Slaanesh possibly hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Drukhari souls. it's not worth it and is arugably WAY worse than Rycad decision from a pure war vs. chaos point of view.
- The Janus peace with Aeldari options that are optimal mirror eachother. The Iconcoclast optimal option and Dogmatic peruasion option do the same thing. They keep you in control of Janus rather than giving it up to the Eldar for them to govern. This is one of those few places where you can get other conviction with no opportunity cost. As an iconcoclast the optimal option doesn't have a conviction shift, so you might as well pass a persuasion chekc if you can, and get the extra Dogmatic conviction + XP.
Also for Janus Protectorate events and Aeldari stuff in general. If you nurture/avoid conflict with the planet as much as you can (like not wiping out the muties, going on the defensive with towers as a Pascal pick which is optimal), you get access to Aeldari torpedoes which are the best in the game for your ship torpedoes. also in combination with last Janus decision, the Farseer if you play all your cards right will actually stop the rescue parties from attacking Janus, and leave Janus to the Humans which they trade with etc.
- Yrliet's ending is best when she does do reconciliation. She saves millions of human lives from war with the Aeldari in the Epilogues. She retains her soulstone as it's intact so when she dies she isn't really dead (unless Pascal destroyed the soulstone in thatepilogue confrontation, which it doesn't say + is just a rumour). And her soul won't be consumed by Slaanesh then like even in the Romance ending (although it's a great romance, but super sad).
- Sure you can easily reach rank 4 Iconoclast, but pre DLC (and still an issue), there's not enough points to reach last conviction rank. Knowing all the shifts pretty much via dialogue Previews etc., I was only able to meta out 480-483 Iconoclast and about 27 Dogmatic. Hopefully DLC can get us a bit higher for max iconoclast and T2 Dogmatic so I can get burning for my good burning for Bladancer!!! :D :D
Unfortunately the other convictions don't have it so good. They get about 50-60 less conviction over the course of the game. They need a lot more conviction opportunities from Owlcat than Iconoclast in future DLC/patches.
- 6 Psy Rating, 9-10 Psy Rating (which I get with my Iconoclast easily with extra turn/extra early/free Heroic Acts with icocncolast rank 4 and Paradox Solved), 13 Psy rating all the same diff enemies are already losing or dead.
And on your last point 100% true.
No. In my opinion the best choice. The innocents and the drukhari are going to Slaneesh no matter you do. So if you cause disjunction:
1. Stop the pain for a quick death at the hands of demons in the case of innocents. So + for the dogmatic choice.
2. Drukhari are dead or in the bossom of Slaneesh. No matter how all drukhari will eventually go to Slaneesh. So no change here. At least you stop them from going on raids or inflicting pain now. So a plus.
3. The cabal you were killing with the disjunction is stealing suns in your part of the galaxy. Now with the disjunction no more sun stealing.
4. Vect throne in ending slides is threatened. With large instability and strife inside Commoragh and reduction of Galactic level raids by the drukhari. So a major plus.
5. Vengence for all the trouble the drukhari caused to you and your people and all others victims.
Considering the Harlequin you are friends and the eldar farseer and Ylriet you travel and do the deed and they are not pissed or upset.
EDIT
Because of ending slides. I always recruit Marazhai, keep him on a tight leash and before going to the ending planet give him to the Inquisition(dogmatic choice). Because it maximizes the number of evil drukhari I can kill.
Even if I'm nice and kind with Marazhai in an ico way what he does to Abelard familiy in the ending slides and becoming another pirate lord in your neck of the woods or even possible rebuild his cabal I always betray him in the end after I get all of his utility in killing drukhari.
And only keep in my heretical run when I romance him.
I think Incendia is told to stand down and get her to become less of a monster through dogmatic choices. Calligos can be brought from chaos worship with ico choices.

(lol jk on dime a dozen they're bad haha).
The world was becoming a demon world when you bombed it to stop it. When you bombed the world the ritual is stoped, the soul don't go to chaos, the world is just broken into pieces. The warp storms are in both dogmatic /ico choices.
The best choice for Janus is to leave the world in humanity hands while leaving the exodite population alone and unmolested and rulling themselves. I personaly don't trust the eldar to have Janus humanity in their best interests to allow them to rule the world in the shadows.
Ylriet ending:
1. Do reconciliation. She eventually leaves you, becomes a dogmatic version of the eldar(anti human bigot) wages war against humanity and dies at the hands of Pasqual. With her soul stone destroyed. Even when there is no major war in the Expanse with the eldar.
2. Do not do reconcilliation and is a romance with RT. This is the best ending in my opinion.
3. Do not do reconcilliation and isn't a romance with RT. She becomes a low key pirate and corsair. Minimal damage to humanity.
4. Ylriet goes to Commorah and becomes a drukhari. Worst ending.
So no not becoming craftworlder again is best ending for Ylriet.
Also if you have Muuran living in isolation on Janus as an exodite he stops the war fairly early.
Unfortunately the other convictions don't have it so good. They get about 50-60 less conviction over the course of the game. They need a lot more conviction opportunities from Owlcat than Iconoclast in future DLC/patches.
I think dogmatic choices are good for pyro. And this patches massivly increased the points won for ico/dogmatic/heretic
By that reasoning, the Rycad Minoris choice doesn't matter either. Although there is evidence of the faithful going to the "Emperor's side" like Living Saints being basically Emperor Daemons coming back to life all the time.
Anyways my Drukhari epilogue was quite uneventful. Nothing really happens with Vect Commoragh just hums along after Marazhai's House is wiped out. Marazhai was politely escorted to Heinrix for interrogation before last mission and after his last Companion quest, killing all my Drukhari foes in the end that came for my holdings or met directly. I also saved a certain someone related to Abelard and prevented the Raids Marazhai was going to perform post endgame, by doing that. I will re-read my Epilogue slates on them and post anything that says otherwise.
On Yrliet's Warrior ending again it's fine and she keeps to her word avoiding confrontation with Humans. It's Pascal/Amarnat collective that is the problem in his optimal ending. They meet out in the Halo Stars/frontiers and only have a (rumoured) showdown, because she's in the way of an Aeldari mural Pascal and the collective are interested in. He cuts her down personally probably because he knew she would be a great threat to the expedition. Pascal was never really a nice guy and only put up with Yrliet barely. :p :P
Still i value the Human and Aeldari lives she saves in her default optimal Warrior ending. She dies at peace with herself and her people (even if it took a bit of memory removal to obtain). The Koronus Expanse, especially one as an Iconcoclast, could really use a Truce and trade relationship with the Aeldari, as the imperium is pretty much blocked off due to the Maw and Nomos, and they will likely not put up with Iconoclast Koronus ever. So having access to Aeldari trade and possibly technology would be great for an "Enlightened" new Imperial civilization.
In relation to my last comment on convictions it had nothing to do with effectiveness. Just Owlcat's screw up of not adding up the numbers to make sure there was enough conviction in the game to at least have the possibility of getting max rank. They gave up on conviction shifts about 1/2 through Act 4 ending with Footfall stuff.
Just because you make dogmatic choices dosnt mean there are priests and shines everywhere:P
