Is there anything worthwhile down the "to the imperium" route?

Can you even visit systems normally if you go there or is it just a book event? Just wondering if you can get any items or if it's just going to kill thousands of crew.

I never got anything or even managed to reach the system. Given what we learn about the route to the Empire, it was doubtful from the start, if we can go there.
