Ship combat tips
I'm fighting enemies that have infinite range and 360 degree weapons with a slow ass ship that takes forever to turn with short range weapons.

What do I do? Avoid fights till I get better equipment?

did you fill your ship posts? because their abilities help a lot. but yes, certain fights are above your pay grade without a lot of luck or upgrading your weapons through the imperial navy rep.

Get Naval rep up and do the colony project that gives you an escort vessel. You won't be able to control it, but it does give the enemies an extra target for the couple rounds it survives. Drop your torpedoes before you make your move, at best enemies will move into range of them on their own, at worse, they're an extra target for them and like with the escort ship, every round you're not being attacked is an extra round for you to deal damage to them. Make sure you're using your ship skills for better defense, better offense and better maneuvering. Sure, you can skip as much ship combat as you can, but you will eventually have to fight.

Yea I did that. I won a tough battle that took half my ships HP and was able to get 2 upgrades. I took increased range and the mobility one.

Ok that sounds like it's quite a ways away from where I am now. My Naval rep is 0 and I have no resources to increase it at the moment. I just got Warp travel in Act 2 and just flying to a few different spots.

Have you put your crew in their posts? First time I got into ship combat I had not assigned the crew to their posts and was much harder without them

I remeber it was rather harsh at the beginning and way easier after learning ship skills. And more interesting since you get more tools at your disposal.
1) Check some tutorials.
2) You can set space fight difficulty to your tastes.
3) You can save midfight and replay bad rounds.

An early ship combat/development topic I started with my recommendations, that also turned into a pseudo colony guide during an Iconoclast oriented run:

It has some early tips on how not to take damage at all really, eliminating enemies efficiently and safely, in addition to where to get the best ship stuff by the end of Chapter 2 with Chronicles of the Protectorate etc.
