They're not dresses... but they do woosh just as a good as a skirt, and wooshy cloathing is the best.
More towards your point thought - I believe that you can turn off the image for the helmet, but maybe it's possible for other items too? Or if it isn't yet, why don't you put in a request for it with Owlcat?
But personally, I think you're conflating a few different things. Namely, that clothing like robes etc dictate the potential for someone to be a good male role model. Also, you're conflating your personal want to have characters to look like a guardsman with your need to look for a male role model. Really, you've got 3 different things here that you're lumping together.
Nope! Skirt, kilt, cape, hakama, long coat, dress... none of those are bad... swish is fun... swishy is best.
Making it sound like there is only one imperial guard look, each regiment look differently and there are plenty of imperial guard regiments that uses great coats or something akin to them.
That said, i wouldn't mind the option of something more Cadian like either. There is apparently a Kasrkin Armour ingame, haven't seen it yet so no idea if it shows more leg or not, but it might.
Abelard basically has the same look as a Valhallan trooper. A greatcoat underneath torso armour.
He DOES look like a guardsman. And he is a naval officer so... yeah. Guy is pretty traditionally masculine.
