But I do want to say my part without spoilers. (I'm playing in act 4 now)
For me, Jae started a love from first sight.
First impression: she's beautiful, capable, double-pistol-wielding badass adventurer after xeno-artifacts. Like the original Lara Croft from 2001 Tomb Raider.
So, I romanced her.
Second impression: She's a useful party member with so many skills! And she's an officer, giving additional turns to hard-hitting companions, which is the core of my tactics.
Third impression: She's a liar.
Not only am I not sure she won't betray me, but I can't say that I know who she really is as a person. How can I be in an intimate relationship with someone whom I don't really know?
Should breaking up and romancing someone else?
It was a tough choice.
I'm playing a male RT and I want to romance a woman.
I want sex to be part of the relationship. With further hopes of marriage and children to continue the Von Valencius dynasty.
But let's see my other options:
- Yrlit, is Eldar, not human, so children are almost unthinkable, and she despises the human species too much. NO.
- Idira is an unsanctioend psyker. In 40k, that's a sentence. As Iconoclast I keep her alive and give her chances, but a relationship with this ticking time bomb is unthinkable. NO.
- Argenta is a nun. And, while badass, not my type. No.
- Cassia is nice. I am in love with her voice and personality. But naive and immature as a child. Also a Navigator, a mutant, probably needs genes from another navigator man to continue her dynasty. And an anomaly that tortures people around her with waves of emotions that nobody asked for. But I really love her voice and personality... SO, MAYBE?
That's it, (unless I'm missing someone).
So, for me, in the end, it was a choice of either Jae or Cassia.
Either
Sex with Jae here and now, with possible marriage and children in future, at the cost of suffering her pranks and lies, and accepting that I can't trust her.
or
Romantic courtship with Cassia now, with uncertain prospect of sex, and very low chances of marriage and children. At the cost of dealing with her childish immaturity and suffering waves of intrusive emotions.
I chose Jae.
I'd like to think that IRL I wouldn't build a relationship with a liar.
But all the other options in the game are arguably worse.
And I don't want to be alone.
And now, in Act 4, after some horrible events of Act 3 and ensuing honest conversations, I think I finally know Jae for who she really is. And there's a chance to build trust and honesty here. At least I hope there is...
(Haven't finished the game yet)
You can eventually build trust. Then she will open up and will stop the lies and pranks. And you can live happily ever after.
To achieve this, you need tolerate Jae's pranks and keep saying that you want to know the real her and accept her. (well into Act 4)
Dogmatic she dies, either on footfall, or when she tells me she is a deserter.
Who thought it was a good idea to tell a dogmatic commissar that she is a deserter.
Icono most often she lives, damn that forgiving heart.
Heretic, the only reason not to kill her is losing another companion.
Won't do that romance a second time.
Giving you the tentacle dog is pretty much a statement of what she is capable of doing. It's not about what you can afford, it's about what she can get you that you don't even think about. The graffiti on the bridge makes sense when you understand her back story (and thus is a little more endearing).
As for her plundering the treasury and using your name to extort people, that is a misrepresentation of events. The amount she took is negligible, and was primarily used to acquire rare gifts for you personally. She never extorts anyone, but with her being a direct line to one of the most powerful people in the expanse people are trying to buy her favor in order to get closer to you. Your High Factotum is just sour that HIS gifts to Jae didn't get him into her corset and now he is framing things in a bad light out of spite for her.
Romance or not she recognizes you as an opportunity and is acting in a way that will at least forge a business alliance.
Cassia is a literal noblewoman of great virtue, and Yrliet bonds with you deeper than any actual human woman can (spiritually).
You have better options, but you deny one because she is a "monster", and the other one because she will not go to bed with you.
I guess you deserve the pilfering golddigger. I get wanting sex (though not in a videogame, but some people RP hard) and saying no to Yrliet because of it, since it is a very basic human bonding instinct; but turning down Cassia because of appearances, makes you deserve the hussy.
At taht point they are more like "surprise purchases".
She does, in the end, actually love you, though. And even a strictly political marriage will indeed be favourable for your House, a bit like the japanese emperors had with the Fujiwara clan, in which the next emperor would always marry a Fujiwara wife, securing the clan's loyalty and political influence.
Even after the dynasty's erosion under Theodora's rule, you are still at a level of wealth where money doesn't matter. The gift isn't what she purchased, it's the statement of "look where my hands can go where yours cannot go easily"
