Once again they ruin their game with another terrible mechanic. I only get 1-2 navigator points per unexplored system but unexplored systems are rare at this point.
If it's not the main quest you can probably keep going and wait until chapter 4 to explore those systems.
Please, use that cheat mod if you must but shut up about it already. Basically it needs to die. It's a major problem for Owlcat games. Some folks like cheating in thioer games but for most folks cheating ruins the game experience. It would be better if the mod was called itself "Toybox cheat mod".
Yeah, I brought this up during Alpha. They sorta improved it but not entirely.
I don't know how far you got exploring the sector yet but the following info may help you out:
* Red routes involve very nasty fights. They are best avoided by spending one NP to downgrade them to orange.
* Orange routes involve annoying but easily doable fights, they represent the most annoyance really.
* Yellow routes involve skill checks against a fight which will, should Cassia pass them which she usually does, net you some bonus NP. I think you can use this to farm extra NP at a pinch.
The main strategy to avoid NP pain is to save up your NP to create network of longer strategic "super-highways" for use in travelling about the sector quickly and painlessly. This enables you to avoid a lot of jumps and you can use them to chart routes to were you need to go regularly that avoid orange and red routes altogether. You make them by clicking on a distant system that does not have a direct connection. You can spend 6NP to make a green route there (don't matter how far it is), five a yellow, four an orange etc.
An obvious "super-highway" strat is to connect your colonies directly and especially to Footfall. But you can actually optimise that plan further if you study the map. These things pay for themselves because if you fight your way down orange routes to get to a strategic system (only spending NP on red routes if necessary along the way) then by creating a "super-highway" back to civilisation you bypass them all in the future. Short term pain for long term gain basically.
I did suggest in the Alpha that Cassia should give you a quest to create such a route from Footfall to Janus to give players an idea of what they're supposed to do.
You should understand toybox is literally saving this game for many players -- especially those stuck at main quest
Except in this particular case, it is. Mechanic is there, the game tells you that NP is a finite resource, you wasted it and now you complain that it's somehow the game's fault and not yours. And instead of dealing with consequences of your choice, you prefer to cheat your way out. As it was pointed out, you can grind for these points by jumping yellow routes back & forth (you don't need orange ones), plus there are ways to get extra points via quests. I have explored all systems in Act 2 and was left with 10 points to spare (which I think were from getting Hann the navigator on board of my ship with his crew), so it is doable.
Because in this case it is neither broken nor poorly implemented and on top of that it is an essential element of exploration game play and lot of fun. It's part of working out how to pacify the sector.
What is true is that it is rather poorly explained, as I said in my post. You don't know how many NP you are going to get, which makes budgeting them difficult, and it is not immediately obvious that you can create long distance warp routes yourself or why you should do so.
That's why I explained it, because I do know.
If you don't know this then recommending use of a cheat engine in your ignorance is criminal as it is simply devaluing important game play for someone else that works perfectly well as designed. Toybox is a curse for most folks, as are all cheat engines. They become a habit.
Just by going alone in Orange/Yellow road you can gain an event to earn Insights.
I'm not sure what happens if you try to Green everything tho (it's actually possible), but I assume Owlcat think the player will be smart enough to have some Insights as left-over.
