The Expanse is also cut off from the Empire for the time being.
Your lucky you got the one.
Right Theodora was always cut off from the Imperium, her predecessor also I guess and every single von Valancius....
Bigger ship does not mean more guns, or better performance.
Caravels were tiny compared to Asian warships of their time, yet 2 Caravels could often defeat whole navies of 70 or more ships, simply because they had more, and more advanced, guns.
The Von Valancius flagship Frigate is ridiculously upgunned for it's native class. It can even have a Lance weapon, which is often reserved for much larger vessels.
Also, in space, a big ship just means a big target, after a certain point.
With all due respect, we are talking about an ancient dynasty... I mean they should have had the option at some point to perhaps maybe get a bigger one, like everyone else?
And no, these ships take dedicated dockyards to build and maintain. A bigger ship would only drive your profit rating down.
I respect your reasoning. I agree with the effectiveness of that math. However as a grand dynasty you have to give on the 'looks' parameter as well. You should have an impact on the battlefield not only with guns but flair as well to make sure that your enemy won't forget you or potential enemies will avoid you (since they expect a difficult fight). An upgunned frigate is good but it is not scarry.
It would also be a bad deal, and there are very good reasons why imperial ships constantly get smashed by Eldar corsairs in this setting, with their MUCH SMALLER, MORE EFFICIENT designs.
They gave us a Frigate with 5 weapon ports, which is really top of the line, as far as imperial designs go, in 40K.
They essentially gave you a custom-made supership, by the standards of the setting.
Despite her heresy, she was deeply pragmatic, and the frigate we get is MUCH STRONGER than most other ships in the universe, punching up way above it's size class, in basically every metric.
I think i do have an escort with me in since act 2 and it is very "pointy" unlike my more "bottom-heavy" ship.
Edit: Ah, nvm. I was thinking of Gothik and this wiki article https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial_Navy#Battleships . Always thought the "pointy" ram is what makes up a Frigate. Says Sword, Falchicon or Firestorm right in the game.
P.s: considering your ship is overturned anyway it should have been a much nicer looking cruiser to begin with.
P.s2: a greater variety of ships would have made for more interesting space combat as well and we could have picked up different type of escort from each world .
