Why do you need a carouse?
It is written that it protects against some negative effects of poison, stimulants and alcohol. I'm still at the beginning of the game, so I haven't seen its influence - does it protect only in dialogue lines or does it also protect in combat (if they use a toxin on you)? Does it protect you from getting wounded in battle or do they depend only on how much HP was taken from you during the round and there is no way to resist them?

It has a few (Very few like maybe less than 10 the entire game) skill checks, a side content area that constantly rolls the check... And thats about it... you basically make your frontliner lvl it and athletics as it's convenient but most resistance tests are base stats.

this does not in any way affect the ability to resist wounds in battle?

Those carouse checks although quite rare, some of em has very impacting effect on some of the stories. If you are using Abelard just level up Athletic and Carouse, his stats fit those 2 anyway.

Nope. Does ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Toxic is a toughness roll. Stun is a toughness roll. So it's not something to invest in for "Resistance" The only thing it relates to is a late game armour that gives Deflection value = to Carouse/10

The only stat that is used in battle is awareness to see traps and medicae using medic kits. Potentially lore (xenos)/tech-use/demolition if you want to disarm/interact with stuff mid-combat for some reason. Besides that the only battle effect they have is if you have something that scales with them. Like some gear gives you additional stats based on certain skills, etc.
