After trying several times and failing with the odds being 50% (mostly) and all skills somewhat flummoxed - it seems like a plot thing to be able to make the roll (after ten or so tries at 50% you're likely to get it at lesat once).
I passed it on the first try and never knew that all this could lead to death( game over ).
Now that I know, I realise I was just lucky with dice rolls and like you I find it stupid that you could get a game over for a streak of skill checks that can be very undoable if you do not have the proper party/stats buffed...
The same way, I remember I failed to recruit the Space Marine because I failed the 65 Fellowship check and then he stopped talking to me... My save was far behind and I just moved on but it still annoyed me alot...
It was the skill check where i also had the highest chances, but i didn't take it because i suspected it would be a bad idea. It's kinda lame how it's introduced but well...
I guess that it's a single skill check trigger to get the option down the line?
Well, after I failed the Fellowship test, the marine totally shut me out. Was hoping I could still recruit him later but the game went on and I exited the dark city without him :(
Also I guess having a story companion be based off a single skill check result seems odd - at least without telegraphing it.
