The Space Wolves used to be just badass space vikings... then GW did what GW do and boom, suddenly they're a bunch of massive furries who are wolf-everything. So yes, they're 100% closet furries. Anyone who claims otherwise is also a closet furry.

And the whole thing is a simple mistake in translation between Fenrisian and Gothic. The word Vilka does not translate as Wolf. There are no damn wolves on Fenris. All Fenrisian "wolves" are mutated descendents of the planets first colonists. They are literally NOT WOLVES. Even the Chapters name Vilka Fenrika does not translate into Space Wolves.

Didn't the Emperor name the Chapters originally, ergo why Horus renamed the Lunar Wolves in his honor? Or did that come later?

Not really. Before Russ they were known as the VI Legion. Not all of the pre-primarchs Legions had names, and i am sure it was not the Emperor who bothered giving them those names. For him they were just tools anyway.
As for the chapters name. Vilka is the word for all wolf-like creature of Fensris that inhabit its only continent. However it is also a word for great spirits of Fenris in local tribes primitive beliefs. And in many cases the meanings overlap as human tribes are banned from visiting that continet. They live as nomadic sailors sailing between many islands of the planetary super-ocean, and come in contact with the said Vilka very rarely. For them those creatures in flesh and blood are the same as legendary spirits like Blackmane, Iron wolf, Morkai etc..
So the more apropriate translation of the chapters name is... Spirits of Fenris? or something like that.
