Ulfar Is a letdown and needs to be fixed or changed.
Ulfar has almost no armor to customize with, he can't equip gloves, boots, or a helmet which hinders his malleability even lower than it already is because you can't respec him. Also adds a possibly significant negative to his stats being the only one who can't do these things.

EDIT: (Apparently there are helmet options for him, it doesn't make it much better since they are so difficult to get... At the very bottom of Rep trees. Making it so you have to go out of your way to get the dude a helmet vs just taking another companion with ready to go gear.)

for some reason Ulfar has "Second skin" are you serious? Ulfar does not wear medium armor nor does he have the OPTION to equip medium armor in the first place. It's like you didn't even try.

Ulfar has "Combat Medicae" for some ungodly reason, did you know that Ulfar CANNOT use medikits?

Thirdly, Ulfar is locked in with "Unpredictable" which loses value because the perc doubles the bonus when your character is under cover. Guess who's the ONLY companion who cannot take cover in this game.

Not only the fact that he has no variety, but your other companions have so much more variety Late game, there will be normal human-sized armor that has significantly more armor scaling and deflection than his massive, power armor suit does. It's as if they made him for Act 3, and just gave up with the entirety of this character.

I have no idea why Owlcat won't simply give us the option to respec later game characters, there can't be anything wrong with giving the players more options... TO HAVE FUN.

Ulfars "go for the throat" shoots with his pistol rather than his knife/axe/sword, and half of the time it doesn't even work. Why did you take away his other ability in the beta? It was fine, heck why not just let us have both options?

But you want to know what the worst part is? It isn't that he's actually super squishy and can't scale later on in the game, it isn't that Abelard is far more durable than he is, and that Argenta is a much better bolter user, it's the fact that he cannot move. I'm not even sure how many encounters I've gone through where Ulfar's large size hinders him from moving AT ALL. There are multiple encounters where skirmishing and movement are insanely important and the huge space marine can't jump or simply step over boxes or stairways. There are boss encounters where every time it's his turn I get to watch him be useless and stand still while he gets shot and wonder why I'm trying to force myself to enjoy him in the first place.

ya he sucks lol. I never take him.

He can't use helmets? (haven't got him yet). That's ... odd.. because the items database (via Toybox) has several Astartes helmets with nice bonuses (prerequisite is Astartes Equipment talent... which no other character can get that talent but him I presume). I assumed that since there are several helmets in the database that those items would likely showup in game for him to use. Are you saying that he doesn't even have a helmet slot? Or just that you haven't found an Astartes helmet yet? (again, they do seem to exist in the database, but in game they might be rare to find or something).

He can use helmets its just the only ones you get access to right when you get him back are via rep, and deep into some of those rep trees

Ulfar is definitly one of the worst companions. His biggest issues are his size and that he is locked into soldier and arch militant.

Right off the bat, the man is slow, super slow, for a character that you are getting around that point in the game.

The next issue is his size. While yes he has great armor, great HP, great STR, great Toughness, none of that matters compared to your other characters. Due to his size taking up 4 blocks he is super susceptible to burst attacks, vs characters that take up only 1 square. He cant use cover, his weapons are rather weak, he options in gear are lacking.

On top of that since his entire solider tree is locked in, your sol on fixing him because a lot of his talents and traits jsut outright sucks.

All he does in my game is sit on the bridge and scowl at people.

I can imagine size being an issue. I frequently struggle to be able to keep 2 of my characters side by side for certain talent bonuses simply due to the the crowded nature of many battlefields... I am not looking forward to the prospect of having to struggle with a giant set piece that uses up a bunch of space on already small battlefields, can't use cover and will basically get hit by 100% of burst fires shot at him due to his size.

He bugged out while he was AI controlled in a Chapter 3 mission because he could not get to where he wanted to go because he's so colossal. Taking away the choice of how to mold him was a trash move, I believe they'll rectify it in time, but should never have been released in this state, he would MELT as a Vanguard.

yeah space marines are supposed to be super op but hes weaker that normal humans

i definitely think gloves and boot restrictions should be lifted all around

dont even need to make new models to fit ulfar or the aeldar, just let them get the bonus

and his movement definitely needs fixing,

Agree that Ulfar needs more options, preferably Melee or Tanking based ones as well as more gear and/or Respec.

I was sooo disappointed with Ulfar... I was expecting I can at least equip him with some nice weapons or/and trinket but nope... I mean, I understand that from the mechanical perspective, game balance and stuff, he must be this way and not like a "real" Space Marine, but I mean, this is just underwhelming, I didn't expect him to be this weak.. I don't know, I just recruited him, maybe it gets better with time :P

Walk out of the power armor and use it as cover. Argenta has power armor feat. They can both hide behind the power armor.

Heal me Argenta
Heal me Ulfar

I definitely feel he needs talents built around him being a melee-capable arch-militant. Give my poor man close-quarters shooting and soldier talents that don't buff things he won't even bother doing, arch-militant is borderline the most powerful archetype in the game right now and he somehow makes it feel mediocre.
Khryst Dec 18, 2023 @ 3:16pm
I feel like there no was thought process put into him.

you look at his abilities and it's all stuff that's "recommended" if you made a character using his archetypes.

WHICH ARE ALMOST ALWAYS TRASH.

if they could fix his "charge" and actually make him use a melee weapon for it instead of his gun...seriously wtf is that ♥♥♥♥...they COULD make a large character work but their current movement engine works against him. not only is finding paths to move, but also in just traversing areas with ladders (he can't use them at all)

It's almost as if like soooo many things beyond act 2 absolutely zero testing was done to see if it works.

He CAN be usable don't get me wrong, but by the time you can make full use of him you've already gotten a full team of usable characters with gear. whereas with Ulfar you have to go out of your way to get him gear and it doesn't make him stronger then anyone else just on par with them.
Mhorge Dec 18, 2023 @ 3:25pm
Ulfair I think is buggy as hell, I've been walking around the jungle planet in Act IV and I've had him 'bounce' (for want of a better word) into inaccessible areas because he gets stuck on geometry often. The jungle planet in particular just is not built to utilize him with the narrow bridges etc and pathways.
Franky Dec 18, 2023 @ 3:25pm
OP is wrong about gear, whilst there isn't exactly a lot of choice you can find ulfair helmets and such.

100% right about him being a garbage character.

FFS he is a space wolf with 30 perception so much for those keen senses eh?

Lol 35 willpower? And they shall know fear apparently.

30 agility? It's a miracle astartes don't trip themselves when getting out of their drop pods.

That he has a ton of useless talents already picked for you is the icing on the cake, and let's say you wanted to make a heavy weapons specialist out of him to put that strength to use then lol you will still want to pick up the heavy weapons trait that reduce str requirements as its a prerequisite for other hvy weapon traits.
Khloros Dec 18, 2023 @ 3:27pm
Honestly there is just no saving that character unless you get toybox.
If you dont have toy box to completely rebuild him from teh ground up, he is not worth taking, every.
