Forgot to mention that nothing happened on next turn also.
This. It's a risky manoeuvre. You need to use it when you know the enemy has no ability to hit you or mini warp jump to hit you. Then next turn you're back to full.
I will check out this. Might be a graphics bug then.
You already have them on battle start. They're represented by those thick grey lines around the ship. There's a line for each side of the ship which shows the shields for that side.
When one of those sides becomes dotted after an attack it means your shields are damaged. When shield is down completely you will not see a grey border anymore. That means hull damage if you get hit there again.
So when you have a whole bunch of missing/dotted lines you should think about getting out of range of attacks for that turn and next turn to restart your shields.
Not by default. With the Corpuscarii Chant ultimate ability for the shieldmaster post, the most damaged facing will regen 50% of it's max health every turn, but that's a ways off at the start.
The more HP your shields lose, the higher the chance that at least some damage will bleed through to the hull. When they're at full strength they should block the first shot entirely, but after that it becomes an increasing risk that some (or all) of a shot will reach the hull. The reinforce shields ability reduces the chance for the reinforced facing to let damage bleed through (as well as reducing the damage the shield takes).
