So if "some guide somewhere" mentions Sister Argenta, then the author of the guide had her in his party...
About Commissar - I didn't choose to attack him and fought the big snake instead. But you should have some okay-ish gear from the Pit (the big snake tells you to look in the garbage container for weapons). My MC got a heavy stubber from there, everything else was a breeze then because I could just mow down everything with hails of bullets.
Fighting the snake is a much easier choice/fight, I'm struggling with this one though I did find those weapons too
Look around more. Kill more bystanders in the chasm (the streets) and explore places again after some story has happend. you will find your crew little by little.
So if you are talking about fighting the Commissar AFTER the first arena fight - then I suggest to grab your gear and - more important - the Space Marine companion from the Anatomical Opera.
You can flip it around and go beat up Malice for the Commissar instead. He'll even show up with some mates after a turn or two to come help you
Just bear in mind he'll appear from the entrance, while you'll likely be close to Malice since you had to start the conversation there, so it'll take them a bit to reach you and try to help.
Okay, now I'm super puzzeled because you wrote about fighting the snake is easier.
Anyway - the first fight with only 2 party members should be doable. What I find very strange is that you are left with Yrilet (I got here only after visiting the Opera). But it can very well depend on all the other companions you had in act 2 before being captured.
If you can't make it through the fight and / or don't want to reduce the difficulty then I'd suggest going back to Act 2 and make sure you have Argenta with you. Yrilet is a nice-to-have-sniper, but surely no companion I'd use as pillar of my party (and having only 2 crew members puts more weight on each of them). Having said that - Abelard should be able to handle the fight alone as well - rushing things with melee fighters works most of the time :D (especially ranged fighters)
It is a lot easier I did it this other way after repeating the Commissar fight multiple times with no luck, so I created a separate save to see what the other option was like, but I would rather not take that path in this playrthrough.
I'm not talking about "the first fight" as in the 1st Arena fight, which is no problem, I'm specifically talking about attacking the Commissar when you first meet him and giving his head to Malice after (who then sends you to the Arena)
My MC and Abelard are both melee but they can only kill so many chars and then get overwhelmed with gunfire from all directions. Have you actually done this fight yourself?
Of course - but then again I had my core team with me. Abelard being my heavy hitter with a claymore, Argenta having a awesome flamer pistol (unique weapon "The Exploder") and my main character being a Soldier/Arch-Militant built for mowing down both priority targets and mob reinforcements with heavy stubbers.
I'd sure have winced a few times if being forced to do that with weakened Abelard & suboptimal equipped Yrilet like it is the case for your playthrough.
Yrliet, and the rogue trader can still use consumables, which makes the fights much easier.
I found 4 grenades personally. 2 from a dark elf bike when the solatire initially wakes you up, and another two from a chest
