At first after completing the fight against the turrets, I blew up the transmitter, but then there was no awareness check at all. I reloaded a save game, and again blew it up, but then magically there was a 80% awareness check on it which I passed. So I think just loading a save game fixed it.
What finally worked is I went back to the ship and changed out my party, then I came back and one of my party members succeeded on a -20 awareness check (on Unfair) that revealed the option for the demolition check. My awareness is quite high on several of my party members (including a 110 on my highest) so it's not likely I low rolled the check, but it's still possible. I suspect that maybe checking the wall before doing the transmitter locks out the units from trying it or something, like maybe the roll is set to impossible but still actually checks it? In any case with my B squad I got lucky rolling an 18 on someone with 40 awareness after the transmitter was blown up. Hope this is helpful for someone.
I myself have had a lot of really high rolls in the last 3 days so it is possible to miss stuff and I know my group has missed stuff.
