Best practices on star map (starting out)
What's everyone's game plan on pursuing yellow or orange routes without buying them down?

Just curious.

I wonder how I can progress the campaign further now, we seem to get so little navigator's insight that it is possible to block ourselves from progressing.
i almost ended up in the same situation. i was on 2 navigator points and was lucky to notice a system i hadn't scanned yet.

If you get to the point where you help out Cassia and her navigator house you can get a one time 15 or 25 insight bonus (I forgot exactly how much) that will basically last you the entire game to uncover the star map.

Otherwise you have to spam random jumps and hope you get Navigator event with skill check which if you pass will get you 2-6 insight randomly.

I created new direct routes from all my colonies to my capital -- all upgraded to green. So from my capital I can reach all my colonies(+footfall) in a single jump. For the rest I upgrade the more used routes to yellow and leave the rest how they are.

Though I can't really advice this strategy, because a lot of events only fire after a specific numbers of jumps. And if you go too fast, you'll get events too slowly and you'll either miss those events or get your game bugged. At least that's what happened to me.

I ignore that pretty much. just leads to fairly easy warp combats vs. deamons as far as i have experienced

Unless you're an Officer main, then you get the Warp Encounter in your personal room and get stuck in an Eternal Seize the Initiative loop where you can't do anything because you have no allies to give turns too. ;)
Also for my own personal strat, I've heard you need 3 (9?) insights to avoid soft lock, so I'm hoping to keep a reserve around for generating new routes for that.

My current plan is exploring what I can naturally, and perhaps buying down anything that's red after that. Eventually I plan to buy routes between Footfall and my colony worlds to green, just for lore implications. (It would be nice if there was a Profit Factor reward for charting safe networks between economic hubs like this).

You can get a project from Abelard's granddaughter at the reception when you get enthroned, which helps with spacetravel. But I don't remember the details right now.

Respec your other officer and remove Seize the Initiative or wait for patch.

I agree with what most people are saying: you want green "highways" between your colonies, but for the rest don't bump below yellow, and occasionally do oranges for a bit of extra challenge.

thing to note is orange route has a chance to give you 4 insight, deadly routes sometimes give you interesting battle for each act. i would recommend save and try to get at least 2 of them
This actually is a lot of help, thanks!
