I don't appreciate that the initiative is a lie
If you're going to implement an initiative, don't bother even trying to tell me that it's a legitimate system when you'll just have the rebel agitator go first every time no matter what so he can apply his overpowered buff on his 30+ allies. I'm not sure how i'm supposed to counter that in any way when the guaranteed buff is permanent on all his allies once it's activated, and doesn't go away if you kill him. It just doesn't make sense to me. Seems like artificial difficulty to have the first encounters outside of the tutorial to have enemies that just get a free +10 stack to their damage that almost one shots all my characters.

Seize the initiative officer talent.

I love it when people who don't understand a system accuse it of cheating when it isn't. Always makes me chuckle.

Welcome to Seize the Initiative talent, some enemies have it too.

Get a grand strategist on your team (Cassia makes a good one). The first turn you are talking about can only be used for officer abilities. After that, Cassia will go and you can use the strategist zones to better prep for the fight. Think of a grand strategist in this game as the pre-buffing mechanic from Pathfinder games.

Not making cass/officers master tacticians is a huge waste.

Potentially, this doesn't really help OP's problem though since he says he's getting screwed over in round 1. Just offering advice on a way he can use to survive with a character that pretty much everyone always has in the party. I personally use her as strategist while my MC is a tactician so we can just make sure the whole map is practically dead or debuffed before they get a turn.
i mean i appreciate the mention of these feats that would help that but i'm literally at the start of the game and these features don't seem to be available to me.

That is an officer class only feature, while the strategist class for cass or whoever you want it on would be something around the end of chapter 1.

If you have an officer who is level 4 (or somewhere around there) they can take the talent which allows them to use officer abilities first in combat before anyone can do anything.

yeah i found it as i had leveled up after the encounter. it went alright but one of the mega buffed dudes insta killed idira from max health lmao. but at least it only messed up her ballistic skill that doesn't matter.

I just landed on that planet under siege after the prologue and got my first glimpse of enemy officers seizing that initiative and buffing all their laz-rifle allies.

Ouch, that was a wake-up call after the tutorial encounters which were a little too easy. Got destroyed, I now have cracked ribs and other semi-permanent injuries.
Well played Owlcat..

Put your old man tank out of cover in the front. Make him the target of choice. Put everyone else in cover or far back.

The guy dodges and parries almost everything effortlessly at the start of the game. Hes the gigachad of your starter squad.

yeah that's what i'm starting to do. i gave him the agro skill as well with some deliberation because the "touch range" wording made me nervous that it was a trap skill that wasn't actually going to be good. haven't used it yet but i'm hoping this will make controlling the battlefield a little easier for me.
