Abelard is Imperial, not Death world. So no hammer/axe bonus.
I kept him with chain weapons so far. No regrets.
My Trader is also a naval warrior (forgeworld) who uses power hammers.
Personally I prefer swords where possible because the +10% parry and thoroughly evil -10% to WS on enemies if you hit them with one is great, but I can definitely see the value in giving him a Thunder Hammer and going to town.
There no reason to wear a pistol for him (if you're not going Arc-Militant route) as with his BS he isn't going to hit anything past first Act. But with power hammer & loaded with offensive talents he's awesome. Especially if combined with full Officer - he can give him 3 extra attacks at cost of 4AP.
