And it would seem like we are in the Cicatrix Maledictum era, by context clues such as the massive Warp instability and how Cassia mentions that she can't find the Astronomican.
Also, didn't Cain get called out of retirement and back into active service for the 13th Black Crusade? Not sure if Cadia had exploded yet by then, but I'm quite sure one novel had him dealing with a Chaos Champion of Slaanesh leading a problematic invasion that had been gulping up planets in it's path during the Crusade.
And are you thinking of Kronus, from Dawn of War?
Pretty sure Cain is long dead by now. It's been like 250-300 years since his novels, IIRC.
Let me see..
"Cain's Last Stand (2008) takes place in what was the "present day" of Warhammer 40K (note the Dark Millenium story event, which moved events forward into the 42nd, had yet to occur), after Cain has already retired to Perlia and is teaching at a military academy. Of course, one of the events of WH40K's present day was the 13th Black Crusade, which catches the tiny planet up in its grasp. Abaddon knows about that universe-altering artifact, which has been returned to Perlia, and if Cain can't stop them from getting it, Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies."
Cain survived the 13th black crusade (thus also the destruction of Cadia and the creation of the Cicatrix Maledictum), keep in mind that warp travel makes time flow funny, many members of the imperial guard or other void travelers can be born hundreds or more years ago on their homeworld but still be in their twenties from their relative time perspective. Then we have rejuvenation on top of that for important characters (Even with warp nonsense in mind he was over 200 at the start of the 13th black crusade).
In his books he is presumed to have died in the first or second century of the 42nd millennium (so it haven't happened yet) and is noted to have been buried with full military honors.
Do note that on official imperial records he is still alive and on the "active duty roster" even after that point, since he has been believed dead so many times that the Departmento Munitorum basically just gave up and refused to entertain the idea of his death anymore :D
