Ambushes
The way the game implements ambushes is pretty poorly implemented.

There should be a hidden perception test to determine whether the player has spotted the enemies, and if it succeeds the enemies become visible. That way you can initiate combat by forcing fire or walk in normally and there is not an ambush round.

As it stands at the moment, you see enemies up ahead, and there is nothing that tells you whether it is an ambush attempt or simply just a combat that will begin.

I know you can just initiate combat by sniping an enemy or such, but I don't want to miss potential interesting stuff that happens by bypassing straight to combat. The result is: I see enemies up ahead, I walk forward, and if it triggers an ambush round with no interesting pre-battle effect, I quickload and snipe them.

If you're talking about the prologue the whole thing is scripted up until the boss fight anyway

Nah, spaceport at the (I presume end) of Chapter 1.

Spotted the enemy sniper from the elevated platform, but don't have a shot on them (why can't you split you party pre-combat and leave a sniper up there?! The elevator teleports the entire party, even if you only have one character selected!). There is no point where I can get an instigating shot on them. So I have seen some of the enemies, but am getting forced into an ambush.

I'd honestly rather the enemies just be invisible without a successful perception check.

I think the dumbest part is you can only BE ambushed, you can't DO an ambush. Even if you attack from outside of combat it just starts combat in which you can still go 40th after 39 enemies have taken turns punching you in the face despite you getting the drop on them.

The TTRPG handled it with perception / awareness checks, I agree that this version by Owlcat should have just done the same.

Idira can protect you from some ambushes.
I personally don't use her tho.
