Why always Imperium?
Some of us don't want to be the Imperium. Why do these games never make options to play the other races?
So many good looking games have this limitation and it's stops me from buying. Adeptus Mechanicus is another example. I would have bought the game if I could have played as Necrons but no you must be Imperium. Dull as dishwater.

Handing the warrant to a robo skeleton is a slightly harder sell than giving it to a psyker

Warhammer Gladius is for you then, you can play all the race. Dawn of war too.

Quick guess "Biggest faction" and "Easiest to sell to everyone cause hey, humans!".
And while I do agree there's definitely good potential outside of it... Well, fully orkish games don't really lean themselves to a CRPG as much as a side scrolling beat/shoot-em-up for example.

Well Rogue Trader is an Imperium of Man thing...

There was Tau Firewarrior about 15 years ago if that is more your thing.

Oh, on the one hand I really want to play that, on the other, that's probably cause of nostalgia.

But yeah, if you wanna play some other faction, there *are* games out there, just not a lot, and even less CRPGs

Imperium isn't a single faction. It's a banner over a myriad of factions that I'm not even going to try to count. So there're a ton of options. You already mentioned Mechanicus, which is totally different from this.

I do believe the OP wants something not at all Imperium aligned. That's why they brought up Mechanicus.

You want the frank bottom line answer?

Because, the core of Warhammer 40k is the Imperium. It is what the entire setting revolves around. It is the largest volume of sales. It is the easiest subject to do right.

Look at Firewarrior, 40k's first shooter was about the Tau. Adnit tanked. I would love if we had more games whose central theme didn't include the Imperium or Chaos ***at ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all*** but so long as GW is exerting enough control, what we do get like that is going to be severely limited.

Games Workshop forces companies to make games solely about the good guys of the setting, because GW really wants to remove as many non-humans from the tabletop as they possibly can to cut costs. Simple as.

Thats why im not that fan of WH40k compare to fantasy, but GW in 40k basically only worked deeply on Imperium and its different aspects, all other "xenos" races are more like an enemy fluff and was never as expanded and would be not the best material for a game outside of maybe strategy game that is less about writing and more about gameplay.

It was a decent shooter for the time too. I quite liked it.

Because they'd have to make entirely new stories for each race? What did you expect? It's called rogue trader.
