If you want to get into the lore, and don't mind humor and criticism as part of that learning experience, 1d4chan has great articles to read on the things relative to this game. You don't need to read all 1500 books.
It was the second WH40k RPG, the first was Dark Heresy where you played an inquisitor's retinue.
I am looking forward to, potentially, Black Crusade, where you play as proper heretics, chaos sorcerers and traitor space marines. If Owlcat ever makes that, I'd LOVE playing that. Possibly. Might be less fun that you'd expect.

Anyway, yeah. The game explains the important stuff as you play, and you have the option, in character, of asking about a lot of the less usual aspects. No worries.

You can always go deeper with Warhammer 40k lore, that's part of the fun, but it's a good primer with a few stipulations.
If you ever want more, my personal favorites are the Templin Institutes videos

They do videos on many different universes.
thanks for that info, very much appreciated and well explained
and looks like I have a few videos to watch before i get right into the game... thanks all.
