How does co-op work in this game?
Title really, looking for a good CRPG to sink my teeth into, and love 40k - how is the co-op, similar to Larian games (BG3, Div 2 etc.)?

I tried the co-op last night but didn't get far because only one player can bring in their custom character. The other player is assigned a character. Never played Warhammer or an Owlcat game so just going to do this playthrough independently. A little disappointing but can also play "side by side" so to speak, if you are in close proximity to a friend/spouse/relative. You can join a co-op game whenever too. Each player can be assigned a character(s) to control.
In this respect of custom characters story-wise, it's kind of like BG 1 and 2 (since there can be only one Bhaalspawn.)

Here's a thorough description how the mode works. There are some inconveniences there right now (such as having to have the exact same additional content to play together or having to temporarily switch to single player for creating a custom character for the other player), but we will address them in the nearest patches.

You can use two custom characters. There is a fancy guy on the bridge of your ship. You meet him as soon as you get the ship under control. You can ask him to look for new recruits. This will bring you to the character selection screen where you made or picked your main character. You can then make another custom character. I do not know however if they interact in any meaningful way in the story or if their just a mobile weapon lol
