Ships
1. Can you bigger badder ships further down the way, or can you only upgrade your starting ship?

2. Do ship upgrades alter the ship's appearance?

Upgrading your initial ship and ship experience are very important. You do have good action economy though. You can fire every weapon at a valid target every round.

2. Sadly no.

This isn't Gothic Armada. The fleets version of a Caravel is all our Space Conquistadors need. The Empire is bureaucratic and doesn't deal with excess. Get that Slanesh heresy out of here :P

You'll understand why you only have the one ship as you play the game.

is the ship stuff linear or can you fly around and have random fights and encounters and stuff?

You can have random encounter, but I believe you only fly between known points in the sector.

buts its based on the TTRPG and ships were a HUGE part of that game, what ship you had or could acquire. The classes of said ships how those interacted and what they could achieve.

The game looks awesome and gets the "story" elements right which is the most important thing but there is no doubt Owlcat has simplified the naval aspects of the TTRPG by a SIGNIFICANT amount and for alot of fans of the TTRPG that is a big deal.

More ships in a future DLC, maybe?

I sincerely hope so.

Thank you. The game just went from my "buy immediately" to "wait for sale" list.

Yeah. That sounds more like it.

I don't know much about its table top original, but ships, including the buying of new ones, sounds like it should have been a major part of a game about trading in space.

Yes and following TTRPG guidance - Frigate (that we have in game) is already a top-class ship available to some minor Rogue Trader dynasty. Navy don't like anyone "stealing" capital ships (like cruisers) from them.

It's almost impossible to "buy" capital ships in WH40k (and like in real life too). You need:
a) find out ancient one.
b) salvage and repair it.
c) have crazy level of influence to make Navy revoke their ownership rights on that ship.

It's doable but for VERY powerful and ancient Rogue Traders dynasties.

Also you will have a lot of issues with repairing capital ships (read - need to spend even MORE influence and power).

All that sounds like a lot of fun, and should have been in the game.

Considering you eventually start facing light cruiser, and regular cruiser sized ships, i definitely wish we could get more than a single frigate, + plus a extra AI frigate that is literally only good for taking a single round of enemy fire before dying.

TBH i think this is something they are going to be adding, probably very soon, considering the other ships are in the game already, and it is perfectly within reason for a rogue trader to be able to own i would say up to a cruiser.

A highly renown and wealthy rouge trader linage might even be so blessed to have a battle cruiser, which is larger then a cruiser but smaller then a grand cruiser and both smaller then a proper battle ship.
