Spoliers: Finale of the Drifting Voidship
I had a suspicion that the Daemon Engine that was featured prominently in the game trailers would appear in this side quest and indeed, it was the final boss of the drifting voidship.

Has anyone been able to defeat it without casualties? I played the battle twice (to see if I could beat it "optimally") and won each time, but not without half my party going down on both occasions. Even when I tried positioning the members far apart, it's hard to avoid getting hit.

While not difficult to take down if you have a bunch of fire and Krak grenades, everytime you hit it, the monster gets 2 to 3 retaliatory AOE attacks with its dual ectoplasm cannons. So it gets many, many attacks. Having high dodge is important in this fight but even my most evasive crew members would eventually get hit for 18 to 19 damage per volley.

Unless you're really lucky, at least one party member will be knocked out. Good thing there's no permadeath.

The time I finally managed to defeat it, I had three down and three half dead. Its retaliatory aoes are pretty devastating even if you try to split the party, especially as you still take damage from its adds until you can get those down. By the end of it I got lucky and it focused on my character who was behind cover and kept dodging its attacks, whilst Argenta, and Heinrix could focus on taking it down from behind. Grenades were definitely the best way to go with it because of the damage trade off.

Luckily the second one I fought in a different location later, didn't have the retaliation gimmick and was much easier because of it.

Nope, that thing is cancer with it's auto double retaliate every time it takes damage, but for the future I'd guess you'd want to use single attacks that do as much damage as possible, nades are a good example as the above poster suggested

I actually managed to kill it without casualties with a lucky last dodge from Irida, she had 3 hp left. An incendiary grenade and a bunch of Krak grenades made it quite easy.

I think it's possible with higher level characters. I hit the "Max Level" at level 36 you cannot invest any more ranks in a new career and, my characters are getting close to 70 hp.

I just think that at the point most people are fighting this they aren't that high.

Running the party up on the platform at the front of the room (low 2 or three stair platform) bugged him out so that his retaliatory attacks always hit the stairs instead of the characters, so I got through that one deceptively easy the first time. Second playthrough he owned me, though.
