And no hand detection is not a likely feature. Gesture tracking has not come far enough for that to be a possibility worthwhile for gun centered games. Not to mention, that is a feature that is currently exclusive to the Quest and some 3rd party peripherals. And you would loose stuff such as locomotion and buttons for the various actions within the game (how would you map A, B, dpad and[or] thumbsticks to your hands?).
Making a gun the controller would be a good idea for arcades and stuff, and they do that a lot. But for the home, and specifically this game, you need your hands to do interactions that aren't just shooting. Not to mention the fact that no gun model would fit all guns (a rifle wouldn't make sense for a pistol, and vice versa)
I'd recommend to you instead to get a VR weapon stock with magnet attachments, I used to use the Protube's magtube myself when I thought I would like Onward (I was wrong lol but that's not relevant). They're essentially just long pole like things that your controllers snap to that has the main goal of putting something between the controllers, and having a third point of reference of your shoulder to aim with.
Use it!
As I use it to this day, without any problems. Or at least not more problems than the base game, and it fixes a lot of them.
