Who is Payday 2's Tony Montana?

So Tony Montana is a complete mess in my eyes. So *Spoilers for Scarface movie* Tony Montana dies at the end of Scarface.

Overkill has stated that the events of the Scarface movie happened but our Tony isn't that Tony Montana. Unless they were referring to the Scarface video game, which they stated is non canon. I really thought that having the video game canon would have made more sense than whatever it is Overkill have done. He manages to escape the attack on his mansion, rebuilds his empire and kicks his cocaine habit. They even use the same voice actor from the video game!

So unless I'm mistaken, the real Tony Montana is dead, and our Tony is a copycat like people have speculated about Jacket.

There is one strange detail as well, when you get into the infamous room where Tony is assassinated, you can see his emblem "TM" on the chain behind the desk. Did Sosa just really like this chair so much that he kept it along with the symbol of his long dead rival? Or is this just because OVK wanted to recreate the mansion from the movie without updating it?

I think the best way they could have done Tony, is to have the movie happen but he is contacted by the Payday Gang/Bain but he's either in retirement at this point or he went into a coma instead of dying. So he either comes out of retirement or a coma to take revenge on the Sosa cartel.

I just feel like the entire lore behind Tony Montana in Payday 2 feels rushed and not well thought out. If someone wants to clear things up for me, please feel free to. I'm just so confused as to how he plays into Payday 2 at all.

One other thought, after the Payday Gang eliminate Sosa, does Tony Montana regain his mansion? Perhaps bribing the cops like Bain does with Safe House Raids?

There is a 100% canonical continuation to Scarface that more or less states Tony Survived.
Edit: I guess it's optionally canon. You see, if the TWIY ending WAS canon, it would ruin the message of the movie's ending, won't it?

Just read TBODB's posts and watch the video he made. It explains why the extended universe is/isn't canon to Payday 2.

this scarface is Tony, the same dollar store Cuba accent, same face and everything, I like to think that his backstory is the one from the comic book, and he contacted the butcher.

Bain says something like it's "80's drug lord". However, like i've said, PAYDAY universe and Real Scarface universe doesn't mean to be same. If you guys ever read comics, you should know something like different universes are a thing. In this universe, Scarface maybe survived from attack somewhere in 80s, and come back after 30 years. Well what about aging then? That's something i really don't know, but look at Sosa, he's not so aged too.

It's already been confirmed through Deveoper Livestreams that the events of the 1983 Scarface did take place in the Payday Canon as mentioned by OP, the real Tony Montana is dead. The one within the gang is just a guy with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I'll be the first to admit, while I love the character pack, Tony's introduction to the Payday Syndicate isn't developed at all, he's just there. Hopefully his backstory gets explained a little bit in some way. Possibly in that upcoming Payday Web Comic Series.

Additionally I agree having the mansion have the same style as when Tony owned it when it's occupied by Sosa now is a little weird, but I would rather have that than the Scarface mansion have a "Sosa" theme to it which in itself wouldn't be interesting.

Lastly the upcoming Scarface Remake isn't connected to this at all since this new version of Tony is going to be a different ethnicity altogether, furthermore taking place in modern times.
