Always do backups with this game.
It sounds like it's too late at this point to save your Payday data, but you really should be using PSN's cloud storage to back up your saves. It's free with a plus membership and it can be set to upload automatically. I use to play Dust514 on PS3 and that game was notorious for crashing. I ended up with a bunch of corrupted data on my HDD and had to do a full reformat. Without those cloud saves I'd have been in bad shape.
I don't let it upload automatically, because the save is corrupted when you leave the game, meaning you only discover it when you'll launch the game again, making it possible to send the corrupted save to the cloud. Saving it manually into the cloud AND on a USB drive, alternating between those two solution is the best way to ensure having a recent working backup
