How useful is a 'detailed' expedition?
I'm not sure how it works. If I've found everything available in a certain area, is it worth taking the extra time to do a 'detailed' search? Does it mean higher quality items?

Thanks!

Edit: Detailled Search in itself doesn't change the odds of finding rarer stuff, it just increases the survey level, which in turns increases the natural rarity cap and unlock the Sneaky Survey event at level 3

15% vs 5% exploration of that level.
Yes, each site can be taken to level 3, which increases the chance of getting better quality artefacts. Using a detailed search adds a base 10% to this levelling process.
Better artefacts have more perk spots, better buzz, etc.

If you are already at level 3, is there still any point to going detailed?

A detailed survey causes two events (instead of usually 1 at "safe") to occur during the expedition. Like LeChatMG said above, this can be used in your favor if you negate the bad events, which then allows you to get two good events. An event that increases exhibit quality can be really helpful if you're trying to get high quality (epic or pristine) exhibits.
Detail also has a chance to give higher quality exhibits

I always fly detail only

I was not aware of that. Where did you see something that indicates that?

There is nothing that indicates it, but its easily noticeable because you can get higher quality exhibits then what your current survey rank allows.
On the better exhibits point, Pinstar mentioned it in one of his early 2PM strategy guides too, a long-term and remarkably consistent Two Point commentator.

But what does exploration even do? Just adds more xp?

No it increases your survey level which in turns increases the maximum quality of exhibits you can get from that location.

When you are on the expedition selection screen, scroll down to see a pie chart that shows your current survey level and maximum quality artifact.
I tend to think of standard being the better choice when I have money to burn, while detailed squeezes more out of your trip fee (though you're still paying salary twice as long, so that's less of a savings).
Puplik Beta:
it is stated that there is +1 on quality
As above - i believe when you select Detailed there is writing just above the go button that explains +1 exhibit quality
The only times I've found when it isn't advantageous to go detailed are (1) increasing your odds of avoiding an MIA or otherwise especially undesirable outcome (still risky) and (2) when you already have all pristine exhibits from that POI and just want duplicates ASAP for analysis to boost knowledge of them.
