Where to find "1 Epic Botany exhibit" to get 2 stars?
I'm trying to 2-star the first museum location, and literally nothing on the entire Bone Belt expedition map provides even a single Epic-quality Botany item. All the current expedition locations provide only "Great" quality at best.

I'm assuming what I need is blocked by one of the Drill-required locations, but since I have no Drill and no clue how to unlock it, because this game's UI is ass and explains nothing beyond the initial tutorial, I'm completely lost, and this is someone who played both Hospital and Campus.

I want to enjoy this game, but its refusal to explain anything, combined with its braindead AI, are really making it difficult for me to want to keep going.

epic is supposed to be hard to find, i had to make a few runs before i could get one but its fully doable without the drill since i dont have it yet either and i think the drill is for the "3 stars" since we keep coming back to that museum over time. the location itself display the highest rated exhibit you have /found/, not whats currently there at the moment.

"Hard" but not impossible. Except that's exactly what this is: Impossible.

Expeditions tell you the maximum value you can get. All of them are "Great", not "Epic". Progression is effectively softlocked. It's very frustrating, although I appreciate your trying to help here.
To unlock the drill you need to progress through the "Bungle Wasteland" area. The game takes you through all museums as you advance and lots of times you need bits of other excavations in others museums to advance. It flows pretty well if you keep the stars fairly even throughout your museums.

Also, while it might not help you right now, don't forget you can go to other maps from your existing museum that you've opened, you don't need to stay in only the map for your current museum.

There are no other maps for me to go to. I already completed both Wailon Lodge and Passwater Cove at one star. Literally my only option is Memento Mile, where I get to sit around and do nothing because I've already explored the entire Bone Belt expedition map, save for the areas that require drills.

You only have to do the place with "great" quality over and over to get more location XP for it. It will finally upgrade to a location where "epic" quality can be found.
Took me 5-6 more runs though to actually get one that was of epic quality.

I used the very first botanic location for it that you can unlock because I already had the most XP at it.
After Memento Miles, Passwater Cove, and Wailon Lodge you get Bungle Waste lands. If its not on your Museums map then work on your curator level, which will unlock more museums.

Also, what Actane just said may be the better answer. If you can get great plants, you can get epic ones, it just takes going back to the same place to increase your quality. I was wrongly working on the assumption you couldn't get any plants. Sorry for the confusion.

When you do expeditions to places you level those places up over time. Just do the Bigfoot place several times until you level it up from great to epic. Took me around half an hour to do. Now I even have a flawless plant.
OP's problem is they can't access Bungle Wasteland without 2*, which means no plant camo and so a lot of human sacrifice on expeditions. Especially as raising survey level to Epic involves multiple expeditions to MIA-prone POI. I'm sure the survey scanner cargo item unlocked after Last Woods will help reduce the number of expeditions a lot though.

At the Bigfoot POI (the first botany POI you find) plant camo is not needed. OP can find their epic botany exhibit there.
Good point, QG. Not a fan of losing staff either, even just-hired interns.
I'm very confused about this as well.

Can you explain more on this?
I'm still confused on what the qualities are, which one is *actually* better in-game? To my understanding it should be Average - Great - Pristine - Epic, but seems that the game puts them as Average - Pristine - Epic - Great? Or something like that? I have literally no idea, it's quite ambiguous, and I can't even find any help in-game either.
Pristine is the highest.

BTW raise the survey level of a map zone to unlock better rarity artefacts.

Thanks, you rock! :D
I first encountered it in World of Warcraft but it is now a standard in the whole game industry
Grey - worst, blue - good, purple - great, gold/orange - best
Two Point Museum is no different in the colours it assigns to quality of exhibit.
Just grind an area a few times, particularly with an expert trained in surveying and you will pull out pristine exhibits regularly.
