As long as a single info board is in vicinity then I don't tend to do more. This seems to fill all knowledge requirements.
So yeah, its a good idea to put multiple down throughout your museums.
Also bins have an upper limit on how much they can hold, if a visitor is unable to put into the bin because they are full, they no longer will want to donate and will move on.
You are right though, the limit should be around 2 connections, it really depends on the exhibits though, some cause visitors to want to donate a much higher value, and if that 1 bin servicing 3 exhibits gets full, thats a loss of earnings.
