Thieves suck and are annoying
Thieves rob the game of all its fun. There, I said it.

I loathe the whack-a-mole nature of having cameras detect a thief, having to pause the game because my guards are all over the damned place, find one, pluck him up, and then drop him on a thief. (and then do that two more times because they always show up in sets of three)

Bleah.

I agree. It would be more effective (and fun) if the guards had radios and communicated with each other. The guy in the camera room should just stay there and automatically alert the nearest guard(s) to the criminal to drop what they are doing and go get him.

Agree on this one.
I’ve never seen a camera operated leave their post for criminal pursuit, it’s always assigned a walking guard for me. But, if your camera guys are getting reassigned to chase criminals, it might help to untick “criminal pursuit” for them so they can’t be assigned that job.

I wonder if there’s a way that criminal pursuit and fires could interrupt job assignments so that the closest guard/janitor can be assigned, rather than the next available (who may be too far away to be effective).
If i ALWAYS have the option to buyback the item i lost, i would be fine with it. But it's annoying if you lose things for good.

This. Had it happen to me. The amount of times I've paused the game to drop a security guard near the thief and they are still unable to stop them! I've got the whole lot, camera room with perks, indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, staff zones and they STILL manage to steal stuff :(
+1
I hope to add re buy system

Hey everyone, wanted to drop in to say that we've more changes on the way for security. We're currently testing tweaks and improvements which will come in our first big update (version 2.0!)

We're really keen to get the balance correct, as we've had a lot of feedback about the difficult of the game as well as frustrations from how the security and thieves system is currently working. We know some people are getting on fine with security and others really don't like it, so we're spending extra time play testing these changes - and once released, please do keep sending us your feedback as it really helps steer us in the right direction ^^

1.2 - Changes so far, already released
  • Thieves take much longer to steal exhibits - 5 times as long
  • Increased cooldown on thief raids
  • Removed criminal escaped advisor message when a criminal escapes without stealing or damaging anything
  • increased cooldown on tannoy that mentions a thief being captured
  • Panoptic pillar is less likely to be stolen
2.0 - Changes not released yet, but coming in the next big update (currently testing these changes)
  • Thieves move a lot slower when escaping a museum with an exhibits (which gives security a good chance to catch them)
  • Camera's no longer scare thieves away from the museum but instead spot them and call a security guard if one is available
  • New camera being added. Free standing camera can also now be placed inside
  • Thief spotted advisor message will no longer appear if spotted by a security guard, this should reduce advisor spam
  • Improve mole thief guild decision making when it comes to stealing exhibits (they no longer choose the closest target)
  • Improve how quickly security guards get assigned to thieves
  • Fix issues where thieves can't be captured near an escape point
The hope is the big update that's coming addresses some of the issues you've mentioned here; thieves will take longer to steal things, and Security is being improved so they "catch on" quicker that something has been stolen. Which should mean you aren't needing to micro-manage your guards!

The other big thing we see mentioned is thieves escaping, especially Molers, as folks have been using the Security Chair to protect against the boggers. The changes to escape methods to help reliability, as well as specific changes to molers, should help address this.

Hope that helps to alleviate some worries - we've also got some more sandbox options on the way as well; so hopefully the experience in sandbox without thieves is better, alongside the experience in career mode with thieves!

Bunch of stuff

And yet STILL no mention on whether or not there is even the possibility of getting an option to toggle thieves off in campaign down the road, or about any of the concerns or questions about ransoms.

This is what I'm talking about, right here.
I'd very much prefer the option for thieves to demand a ransom so that it's possible to get items back. I don't mind if the ransom is high, as long as I don't have to grind for a pristine exhibit and its perks all over again.
TPH: alien invader (had no option to turn off) everyone generally ok with it.

TPC: blaggard invasion (had no option to turn off) everyone generally ok with it.

TPM: Thief mechanic "let us switch it off removing all possible challenge whatsoever"

i get losing a multi-piece exhibit is annoying, i have been there, i got no ransom message either. i just reacquired it. it wasn't that big of a deal.

They do, sometimes. That's part of the problem; we have no idea if it is supposed to happen every time or not, because it doesn't, or how long it is supposed to take to trigger the note so we can know if we're getting one or not, and when we're waiting for the note that may or may not come, the base that was left degrades in maintenance and for certain items can even catch fire, but can't be put out, so you have no choice but to sell it.

It's a big deal when you get a string of thefts at once when you're on a campaign checkpoint of getting X amount of buzz or whatever, so you have to go and get multiple pristines and all their perks back to fix your tours and such to get your buzz back to advance the campaign.

The other games did not include sooooo much RNG like this one does.
It can literally take real-life HOURS to get prestine with the stats you want!

it's never that big of a deal. part of the core gameplay loop is sending out exhibition teams. the running of the museum aspect is another part of it. it's not the only part.
