A lot of grind
At first the game looks great, like the old ones, but the more you play the more understand that grind with lootboxes become ridiculously teditious, you have send ship time after time to roll what you want or needed for a star. Its not fun

It is fun. Perhaps this game is not for you?
Yeah, but it's a fun grind.
In all fairness the rng isn't all that terrible. It's a pretty passive process where you can focus on your museum and other aspects. Not to mention you can throw your unwanted finds into the examination room to increase your knowledge and unlock more stuff. Also, each location only has like 2-4 possible artifacts to find, so your odd are pretty good, even when searching for pristine quality artifacts

eh its not that bad. it depends on if you do all mechanics. You can choose the longer expedition to increase chances for pristine, and like the other guy said use the examination room to increase. it really isnt that bad lol
It helps if you have some skilled experts.
Less of a grind, and the expedition goes much smoother.
i agree that its a giant waste of time but the rest of the game is good enough and its still kinda bearable. maybe on sandbox its less of an issue but on campaign they make you roll for items without regard for sanity. e.g. when you need to buzz up one legendary spirit, which for me meant rolling for the correct pirate. everything else is done so you just sit there an hour to roll for the pirate.

A member of the TPM Reddit posted that the Expedition Rewards RNG resets if you reroll the save after you open your crate (their game crashed on the crate screen, and when they opened the game again, they had a different exhibit reward), so that might be a way to lessen the grind if you're just searching for a specific ghost/fish/item for Buzz/completion reasons. Savescum to get what you want.

Still not fun, but it's a method of attaining what you want until the Devs figure out a way to lessen that particular grind a bit with a special item or something.

What lootboxes and how do they work?
It never felt "grindy" , the only close thing to a grind was maybe in the Space Museum? Even that was not a grind. You tend to be busy with other aspects of the Museum and you do not even need to monitor it , you get a pop up when the crate shows up , you click it and it takes you to the helipad , you open it and send off another. Also you can train a expert in survey at rank 2 they get a 65% bonus to it. Doesnt take much to get to pristine quality after that.

Dunno how else they could of done the acquisition of exhibits and the rarity its just fluff to be honest , you really do not need it unless its a requirement for a star. Also most of my time in game has been setting up the exhibits , I mean really make use of the space and create paths and all that good stuff. So damn fun.
120 expeditions and 15 years in for one item is not a fun grind

Huh? Which single item has you doing that many expeditions?

Anything with "rarely seen" in an area with "commonly seen" drops. Fossil star for example, a lot of people are getting 150+ expeditions in and only ever seeing 3-4, usually average/great quality at best
I am around 35hours~ in and finished like 60%. Its really tedious!

Dude, no need to white-knight all over this. Even a Dev commented on the other "Gacha" post about the grindy expeditions and said the Devs are aware of the issue because it *shouldn't* be happening at quite this rate on *any* of the Expeditions, not just the Star Fossil one.

So, yeah, if the TPM devs *themselves* have admitted there's a problem with the code and are looking into a balance fix of the system, they definitely don't need some random stranger on the internet coming in defending a misfiring mechanic, okay? Players are right to complain about this, because it isn't supposed to be happening.
