The boggyman (I think that's how they're called) only come out from the toilets so... as awkward as this sounds, having a guard and cameras sitting in front of the toilets scare them away as soon as they step out of the bathroom.
Any thief/vandal that walks through the front door can also be dealt with by having a guard sitting near the entrance or a camera pointing at the exit.
If you DO get your stuff stolen you'll get a ransom note and if you pay it the exibit will return to your inventory.
Also...even though it says thieves come when your museum reaches certain level, this is untrue I have thieves in all my lower level museums and needed to invest in security.
-Security booth on that entrance-so a guard can see whats coming at them, not whats gone past them.
-Toilet bandits - camera on toilet entrance/exit, will spook most of them.
-Miners- just requires good camera coverage.
-Always use the thief alerts to pause and quickly locate/deal with them
